DBQ Essay Example Prompt: Using the documents analyze the social and economic effects of the global flow of silver from the mid-sixteenth century to the early eighteenth century. Explain how another type of document would help you analyze the effects of the flow of silver bullion in this period. Historical Background: Spanish colonial America and Tokugawa Japan led the world in silver production from 1500 to 1750. In the early 1570s, the Ming Chinese government required that all domestic taxes and trade fees be paid in silver.

Thesis Statement Point 1 Must be in introduction paragraph Must address all themes from prompt, location and time period Must TAKE A POSITION (This is new) Must set out categories for discussion Bad: “There were many social and economic effects of the global trade in silver around the world.” Good!: “The increased flow of silver during the mid-16th century to the early 18th century caused social and economic effects in all regions connected with the trade by increasing integration of Europeans in the globalization of world trade and creating greater economic opportunities but also growing social divisions with China.”

Addresses all of the documents and demonstrates understanding of ALL Point 2: There are EIGHT documents and all must be addressed Must demonstrate understanding of ALL documents Do NOT just list documents Must show careful and insightful interpretation of all documents Example: “The author describes the change from a barter economy to a market economy as customers now receive a bill, which must be obtained from a moneylender. This document is used to explain the decline of traditional Chinese society and economy.” (doc 5)

Evidence Point 3: Worth 2 Points Supports thesis with appropriate evidence from all documents. One point if you use all but one document The most common mistake students make is to merely quote, summarize, paraphrase, or attribute something to a document, rather than truly support the thesis with evidence from the document. Bad: “In doc 8 Charles D’Avenant notes that the British had been supplanted by the Dutch in the spice trade, but have continued trade in the East Indies for ‘dyed cotton cloth, silks, drugs, and wool.” (This is only a CORRECT summary of doc) Good: “Spain was one of the countries that participated the most in the global flow of silver because of its numerous colonies, highly developed trading systems, and overlying sense of mercantilism during the 16th and 18th centuries. For example, the Spanish colonies in Mesoamerica experienced drastic changes in economy and exploitation of natural resources as they put Indian laborers to work mining silver.” (Doc 6)

Point of View Point 4: Analyze POV in 2 or more documents Explains why this person might have this opinion Must be more than a mere description of that individual by considering and explaining the tone and how the outcome influenced the author’s opinion Bad: “Ralph Fitch (Doc 4) is biased because he is British.” Good: “As an English scholar, D’Avenant (Doc 8) would certainly have wanted to support England’s own economy gain and any Parliamentary movement that would accomplish this.”

Grouping Point 5: Analyzes documents by grouping them in three ways Look for some characteristics that more than one document share, then create a group under the title of that characteristic. Common Groups: Region, Profession, Positive/Negative, Change over time, Economic purpose Bad: “Docs 1, 3 and 5 all reflect the social impacts on China and document 7 is the only one that deals with the economy.” Good: “The global flow of silver during this time period caused many disputes and changes economically between involved countries as seen in Docs 4, 8, and 2.”

Additional Document (POV) Point 6: Identifies and explains the need for one type of appropriate additional document or source. Common Choices for this prompt: A Chinese merchant, Chinese peasant, Indian mine laborer, Doc from Tokugawa Japan Bad: “It would be good to have a document from a peasant.” WHY??????? Good: “It would be nice to see a document from a Chinese farmer to see if the increased flow of silver affected their lifestyles as Document 3 suggests.”

Structure of DBQ Essay Thesis Paragraph: Background information (Yep real paragraph this time) Thesis statement Body Paragraphs: Separated by your THREE groups Topic Sentence: What characteristics do these documents share and how does that support the thesis Evidence Doc 1 POV/Analysis of Doc 1 (Avoid “Doc 1 says) Evidence Doc 2 POV/Analysis of Doc 2 Evidence Doc 3 POV/Analysis of Doc 3 Explain how these documents relate/compare to each other ***Could mention additional document*** Conclusion: Restatement of background information and thesis Include additional document if not done so already
