Roman Emperor Simulation Macdonald AP World History

Object of the Game: Choose an emperor and co-emperor who are undisputed rulers of Rome Players: Two teams of opposing candidates for emperor. Emperor is aided by co-emperor who helps him come to power and will replace him if anything should happen. Social Groups: A. Roman Army C. Provincial Leaders B. Senators D. Barbarians

Phases of the Game: 1. Social Group Meeting – Each group will decide demands to place on Emperor 2. Negotiation Phase – Emperor/Co-Emperor visit each group and make “promises” (Remember, once chosen as supreme ruler and living god, he may do as he pleases) 3. Speeches – Each emperor/Co-emperor will make public speeches explaining what they will do if elected 4. Vote Count – If not unanimous, civil war will break out 5. Consolidation of Power – each group and the co-emperor will be asked if they are completely happy. If yes, then there is a Pax Romana and the game is over. If not, repeat w/ Phase 1 until there is peace.

De-Briefing Questions What part(s) did you play in the simulation? How did you feel about your role? How well did the election system work? Was it easy to get power? Was it easy to hold on to power? Explain. How do you think these power struggles affect the stability of the empire? What do you predict will happen to this society if they continue the political system we experienced? Explain. How is the Roman system we just experienced similar to and different from our political system in the United States?
