Background Joint case with Wärtsilä The North Sea Giant EBL order is the company’s first for this product North Sea Giant – one of the world’s largest and most advanced subsea construction vessels (OSV) Shipyard: Vigo/Haugesund, Norway Gross tonnage: 18,151 GWT Length: 153 m Class: SPS
Challenge The owner wanted to optimize efficiency, operational uptime, cost control and reduce its environmental footprint The solution needed to pass a program of rigorous testing supervised by DNV GL
Solution The Switch technology, supplied as part of a broader Wärtsilä solution This system is based on a unique Electronic Bus Link (EBL) New, innovative and cost-saving solution EBL connects the vessel’s DC-Hubs together, ensuring efficient operations and redundancy, even if a critical fault occurs EBL splits the on-board grids in a matter of microseconds, isolating faults and protecting the complete operational system April 4, 2019
Results The vessel can change between its diesel engines, running just 1, when necessary, rather than the standard 3 it used in the past This results in savings on fuel costs and reduced emissions Faults are no longer a threat, which reduces operational downtime and cuts maintenance costs Efficiency is maximized A global game changer – this is the first vessel in the world approved to run a DP3 class dynamic positioning system with one engine and batteries April 4, 2019
