Your first year review Chris Cole

What I expected…

What I expected…

Much less intimidating than it sounds! Not there to attack you (or your work) or throw you out of university! So what is it? Meet with two members of staff relevant to your field and discuss your work and the direction it is going in. Will review your development as a researcher and progress so far Lasts for a maximum of 1 and a half hours. Overall to check you are on track and have support needed to to get your PhD!

My preparation! Wrote my first year report Literature Review Future work Aims Methods Results Discussion References

My preparation! Wrote my first year report Arranged a meeting with my reviewers. Gave each a copy two weeks before meeting Prepared a 15-20 minute presentation Practiced. Practiced. Went to it… And it was done! Celebrated! Literature Review Future work Aims Methods Results Discussion References

My review experience I booked a small seminar room. And arranged to meet there. Reviewers arrived and we had a general friendly chat (mainly about football and hobbies from what I remember) My talk went: “Introduction -> Methods -> Results -> Conclusion -> future work I had questions during the talk rather than at the end Got great external advice on project that: Highlighted some potential problems Led to a new route for future work to look at Whole thing lasted just a little over an hour

Personal advice Finish well before your deadline and give a copy to you supervisor/s Offer to print a copy of your report for your reviews and hand them over in person Organise meeting well in advance! (syncing schedules can be difficult!) Be clear and concise with your talk Practice your presentation and read your report several times! Put a lot of thought into the future. Take a notepad in with you to jot down feedback! And most importantly!
