Stylistic Devices: Irony Review Irony is saying/writing the opposite of what you mean. Sarcasm is a type of irony that is meant to hurt. Sarcasm is always ironic, but irony is not always sarcastic. When the cafeteria has served a tasteless and overcooked meal and you say, “Great lunch,” you are using irony by saying one thing and meaning another. Irony is sometimes hard to understand because it can be funny, serious, affectionate, or contemptuous. You have to read carefully and watch the way the words and details are used. Caution: if you misunderstand irony, you will miss the whole point of what you are reading.

Look at the following sentences and decide whether or not they are ironic. Ironic (figurative) Not Ironic (literal) Your favorite team just lost by a wide margin and you are pretty disgusted about it. You say, “Great game!” You are traveling in the mountains and see a lovely meadow full of flowers. You say, “Nice view!” Your best friend is learning to ride a dirt bike, something you have always wanted to do. You say, “Wow, I wish I could do that!” You best friend has to take care of her baby sister every day after school, a job you wouldn’t want and your friend isn’t happy about it. You say, “ Wow, I wish I could do that!”

Irony Practice “We divide the world in columns/when we stick to our own kind./ We nurture our suspicions./Keep our stereotypes in line.” “We have to keep our distance/So we’ve another kind to blame./ How come,/if we’re so different,/ we both react the same?” –Holbrook, Poems of Transition Several of the lines say one thing, but they mean quite the opposite. In other words, they’re ironic. Explain what each line says literally, and what it really means? How would the impact of the poem change if it was rewritten as: We shouldn’t keep our distance/ Nor stick to our own kind/ Because/ It’s not so helpful/ And builds a narrow mind.

Create a complete paragraph with a hook, topic sentence, RDF, and E/Es including a quotation Use the text of the Odyssey to explain what character traits were valued or scorned by Greek society.

After reviewing the notes, “stretch” your paragraph into an essay After reviewing the notes, “stretch” your paragraph into an essay. Each group member will be responsible for a paragraph. Person 1= Introduction (hook+transition+thesis) Your thesis should always be the last sentence in the introduction Person 2= Body paragraph 1= What traits were valued (topic sentence, rdf, e/e, quotation, significance) Person 3= Body paragraph 1= What traits were scorned (topic sentence, rdf, e/e, quotation, significance) Person 4= Conclusion (summary=significance)

Identify the problem and then correct the following sentences (consider punctuation and modifiers) Speaking before the graduating class, nothing human should be alien to us was the advice Maya Angelou gave. Churning in the Atlantic Ocean, we anxiously watched the weather report for information about the hurricane.

Corrections Misplaced Modifier- Speaking before the graduating class, Maya Angelou advised us that nothing human should be alien to us. We anxiously watched the weather report for information about the hurricane churning in the Atlantic Ocean.

Stylistic Devices Practice- Irony “Oh, and there’s a thrilling shot of one of the kids being sick on a small fishing boat off the coast of Florida and we are hovering over him offering him salami and mayonnaise sandwiches. That on really breaks us up.” –Bombeck, At Wit’s End Remember that verbal irony implies the opposite of what is said, and irony may or may not be sarcastic (intending to hurt). Bombeck describes a picture from a family vacation as thrilling. Is this statement ironic? Is it sarcastic? Look at the following rewriting of the passage We have a picture of one of the kids being sick on a small fishing boat off the coast of Florida. In the picture, we’re making fun of him and offering him salami and mayonnaise sandwiches. We know it’s wrong, but it’s kind of funny. Which version is funnier? Why? How does the use of irony help shape your understanding of the author’s attitude toward the vacation pictures?
