Long-Range Planning Committee Part of the Bloomington Faculty Council (BFC)

Presentation to the BFC, 10/2 Working document developed during 2017- 18 Not a ‘proposal’ (definitely not THE proposal) Faculty perspective on long-term planning Shared governance with higher administration

Underlying principles IU has been, is, and should continue to be: Residential and research-intensive Elite and meritocratic Committed to mitigating social and regional inequality A key institution for bringing Indiana to the world and the world to Indiana

Distinctive foundations Deep involvement in international and area studies with a particular focus on languages and cultures Long-standing commitments to interdisciplinarity and to pushing the frontiers of knowledge Unique collections and remarkable cultural resources A beautiful campus in a quintessential ‘college town’ A spirit of collaboration, cooperation, and community

What will IU be like in 20-30 years? Climate change Drop in school-age population Automation in the labor market Political instability Persistent economic and social inequality More students arriving with college credit

LRPC recommendations Implement a ‘3-4-5’ plan… instead of trying to block students from graduating quickly, encourage them to raise their aspirations and leave with a master’s degree Consider a new ‘core’ curriculum at the upper- level focusing on research (as a path to graduate education) More interdisciplinarity in graduate education… changing financial models that encourage silos Life-long learning opportunities for staff, faculty, alumni, and the surrounding community Move from ‘zero-sum’ thinking to ‘collective good’

For discussion in 2018-19 Changing composition of the faculty… impact on Research Teaching Service Administration Living conditions Long-term support for research

The LRPC needs your input Collective planning for the future IU is a complicated campus What are your concerns? What are your good ideas? Moving from planning to implementation Working with other BFC committees LRPC is working on the ‘big-picture’ context

Members for 2018-19 Alex Tanford, Law (chair) Heather Akou, SoAAD (continuing member) Colin Johnson, Gender Studies (continuing member) Beth Samuelson, Education Dubravka Svetina, Education Clark Barwick, Business
