Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) ABS Mandates Developing the Platform Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) FMVSS 121 provides the mandates for Anti-Lock Braking Systems (ABS). March 1, 1997 - ABS required on all new air braked trucks/tractors March 1, 1998 - ABS required on all new air braked trailers March 1, 2001 - Power Line Carrier Communication (PLC)

ESC Mandates June 23, 2015, NHTSA published a final rule establishing Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 136, Electronic stability control systems for heavy vehicles. FMVSS 136 provides the mandate for Electronic Stability Control Systems (ESC) August 1, 2017 - ESC on all new 3 axle truck tractors August 1, 2018 - ESC on new buses (motor coaches) over 33,000 GVWR August 1, 2019 - ESC on all other new truck tractors and Buses over 26,000 GVWR

Benefits of ESC ESC Continuously Monitors the vehicle’s rollover threshold Activates to slow vehicle when threshold is exceeded. Applies individual brakes to reduce directional instabilities Utilizes ATC to transfer torque to wheels with best grip Estimated to prevent between 1,424 - 1,759 crashes, 649 - 858 injuries and between 40 - 49 deaths annually.

ESC Diagnostics TOOLBOX™ Software version 12 or higher REQUIRED

Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) Field Calibration Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) The SAS Calibration must be done after an alignment has been performed or steering component replaced Calibrated using diagnostic tool whenever when replaced OR when any steering component is adjusted or replaced It is necessary to perform the SAS calibration prior to the ESC initialization.

Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) Field Calibration Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) If SAS has NOT been replaced but vehicle has had an alignment performed or other steering components have been replaced, it is necessary to recalibrate SAS regardless of current calibration.

Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) Field Calibration Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) ON Blinking The SAS calibration is now completed. The ATC lamp will blink continuously to inform driver ECU is in learning mode. If SAS calibration fails; cycle ignition and retry calibration again.

Field Calibration ESC Module Blinking The vehicle MUST come to a complete stop before starting the steering ratio calculation and turning the steering wheel 360 degrees for the first time. Blinking

Field Calibration ESC Module ON Straight Driving Adjustment is completed after ECU accumulated 800 feet @ 15 MPH, the ATC lamp will stop blinking and will remain ON. ON

Field Calibration ESC Module OFF Once steering wheel is turned one revolution in either direction (360 degrees) accelerate slowly until 12 mph is reached. Continue driving in a circle until the screen automatically changes to inform the steering ratio is being calculated. Maintain the vehicle speed and conditions until ATC lamp turns off. OFF

Field Calibration ESC Module Blinking OFF Turn the steering wheel 360 degrees in the opposite direction and repeat the driving conditions. The ATC lamp will start blinking when the required conditions are met. Keep driving in those conditions until the lamp turns off. Blinking OFF

Field Calibration ESC Module Power down cycle time and sequence will vary amongst vehicle manufacturers. Some vehicles might require the key to be removed from the ignition for ignition power to be completely turned off. Please follow the vehicle manufacturer procedure to make sure ignition is turned off. When the ignition is turned back ON, check that no active or stored faults are logged in the ECU and that the ABS and ATC/ESC warning lamps are OFF.
