WASCON 2009… ISCOWA Stimulating Dialogue Between Stakeholders in Lyon ! National Institute of Applied Sciences

ISCOWA From the logic of concentric circles… National Institute of Applied Sciences

To the logic of integration Industrial sector Scientific sector WASCON 2009 You know we need a phrase giving a clear idea of what we want to acheive, what is the main challenge for the next edition of WASCON…. After the ISCOWA meeting on Tuesday, the exchange during this week and a short brainstorming within the borad Yersterdat, it appears that what we want really to improve in our work is to increase our contribution to the industrial and regulatory development od the recycling of waste. For we cannot remin between us, we need to re-open the windows and the doors and to invite industrialists and decison makers to a great brainstorming around this field. We will come later with some proposals but before let me introduce Lyon and EEDEMS. Social and political sector National Institute of Applied Sciences

GLOBAL BALANCE IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF WASTE RECYCLING ISCOWA WASCON 2009 in Lyon GLOBAL BALANCE IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF WASTE RECYCLING Which topics ? Quantification and modelling of emission New products or process development for reuse of wastes in construction New scenarios or new wastes flows (sediments) General assessment strategy for environmental quality of construction products National Institute of Applied Sciences

ISCOWA WASCON 2009 in Lyon Ecological impacts and health impacts (huge concern in the construction sector after the « asbestos » crisis) – interaction with water management in urban areas Avoided impacts -> by not using non renewable natural material or energy- costly products -> by limiting waste landfilling National Institute of Applied Sciences

ISCOWA WASCON 2009 in Lyon Social acceptance : apparent contradiction between « safer » product and « waste-containing » product. Economy of recycling (the key issue if not the only one !) Multicriteria analysis and decision making tools Barriers to waste utilization (regulations, market, conflict of interest between different industrial sectors, specifications of the recycled materials Incentives, e.g. through specific requirement of recycled materials in call for tenders, taxation, … National Institute of Applied Sciences
