Dubai regional meeting LEO Psoriasis Academy 2018 Dubai regional meeting GCC Derma Summit: Saturday 22 September, 2018 09:00 AM–12:00 PM

Summary Dr Anthony Bewley Prof. Sameer Zimmo

Key learnings Psoriasis Academy is designed to empower patients and encourage physicians to embrace a person-centred approach to treating psoriasis Optimised patient-physician communication may lead to improved healthcare outcomes Research has shown that patients cluster into one of four profiles: Understanding patients’ concerns, thoughts and needs may lead to better management of expectations and improve quality of life Self-manager Actively engaged Why me? Help me! Ability to quickly adapt consultation style to meet each patient’s needs is essential; the first 2 minutes of a consultation are key

Key learnings Suicide ideation is common among patients with dermatological disease, especially psoriasis. However, very few patients will be immediately forthcoming when bringing up this topic Therefore, asking questions is incredibly important. Discussing these topics openly will enable patients to feel more comfortable talking about any suicidal thoughts they have been experiencing Being able to assess the likelihood of suicide means being able to assess a patient’s risk. This means a successful intervention is possible ! Discussing suicide does not make it more likely that the patient will consider it. Instead it is likely they will feel relief that they can talk about these feelings
