Historical Significance How do we decide what is important to learn about the past?

Get Ready… You will have 2 minutes, to record words or ideas that are used to describe what makes something significant…. And..GO!

The 3 “R’s” (and the other) Results in Change- deep consequences for many people, over a long period of time (how were people impacted? How MANY people were impacted?, Did it result in some form of change) Revealing- sheds light on enduring or emerging issues in history or contemporary life (therefore its relevant to today) Relevant to historical narrative- shown to occupy a meaningful place in the historical narrative (was it long lasting enough that it is still remembered, still talked about) Varies- significance varies over time…yep it does

Significance What we decide to learn and remember will change the future (not just in big terms but individually) Page 18- 19 in History Uncovered

Significance The scenario is this: There are 5 events that are in a hot air balloon that is in danger of crashing. The only way to save the balloon is by throwing 2 of the events out. The only criteria to remain on the balloon is to be one of the 3 most historically significant event there Rank the events from most important to least (remember the criteria for significance we learned in class)- the last 2 events (4 and 5) are thrown out.
