What does it mean to remember something? Memory What does it mean to remember something?

Memory Take this test How well did you do? Would you say you – overall – have a good short term memory or a bad short term memory? KLQ: What does it mean to remember something?

Memory What is the first thing that you remember? By which I mean, what is the first thing after all the things that you have forgotten KLQ: What does it mean to remember something?

Memory Memory is the first SECONDARY way of knowing By this I mean, we don’t learn anything new from memory, we can’t gain new knowledge about something. We always need to use another, primary, way of knowing first to discover that fact. KLQ: What does it mean to remember something?

Memory In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure-dome decree : Where Alph, the sacred river, ran Through caverns measureless to man Down to a sunless sea. So twice five miles of fertile ground With walls and towers were girdled round: And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills, Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree; And here were forests ancient as the hills, Enfolding sunny spots of greenery KLQ: What does it mean to remember something?

Memory Kubilai Khan was written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (an old blue). Does anyone know the story behind its writing? KLQ: What does it mean to remember something?

Memory “The Author continued for about three hours in a profound sleep, at least of the external senses, during which time he has the most vivid confidence, that he could not have composed less than from two to three hundred lines... On awakening he appeared to himself to have a distinct recollection of the whole, and taking his pen, ink, and paper, instantly and eagerly wrote down the lines that are here preserved. At this moment he was unfortunately called out by a person on business from Porlock, and detained by him above an hour, and on his return to his room, found, to his no small surprise and mortification, that though he still retained some vague and dim recollection of the general purport of the vision, yet, with the exception of some eight or ten scattered lines and images, all the rest had passed away like the images on the surface of a stream into which a stone had been cast, but, alas! without the after restoration of the latter” KLQ: What does it mean to remember something?

Memory Coleridge had the entire poem in his head following a dream he had However: he got called away halfway through writing, and when he got back he found himself unable to write the rest of the poem He spent a good chunk of the rest of his life trying different opiates, sleep remedies etc. trying to remember the rest KLQ: What does it mean to remember something?

Memory What is the one thing that you want to remember? It could be the name of a cartoon you watched as a child, a picture you hazily remember from years ago, the name of someone you met on holiday. Write it down, and then discuss it with the group KLQ: What does it mean to remember something?

Memory Memory is, unlike the other ways of Knowing we have discussed, innately fallible. Knowledge we have through memory can just disappear, not because the knowledge is not sound or true, but simply because our brains suck KLQ: What does it mean to remember something?

Memory Our memory can fail us in other ways, also Try to count, and then remember, the amount of times this rubber ball is passed between the white team members. KLQ: What does it mean to remember something?

Memory We’ve all seen people pull this face when faced with a difficult set of things to remember KLQ: What does it mean to remember something?

Memory It takes CONCIOUS EFFORT to remember something Committing something to memory is hard! This is why you can’t get distracted whilst revising or in lessons, you only have so much brain power This is why I still don’t know half of your names KLQ: What does it mean to remember something?

Memory Why do you think memory exists? Why would humans evolve to have memory? KLQ: What does it mean to remember something?

Memory Listen to this podcast. What do you think the implications of it are? Could we use similar kinds of technology in humans? Would this be ethical? KLQ: What does it mean to remember something?
