AR 2 A X B Here we have an attacker who is about to send a ball through. When should the AR raise the flag…immediately?… I want you to raise your arm when YOU think the decision should be made, ignore your neighbor C AR 1

AR 2 A X B Should the AR raise the yet?…Everyone let your flag (arm) communicate your opinion… C AR 1

AR 2 A X B How does the AR know whether A, B or C should be penalized for offside? When does the AR make that determination? Based on what? But what about the red bench screaming to “raise the flag”? Not so easy is it? Let’s see 3 different videos and you make the call… C AR 1

Does the AR impact the game? Is the impact positive or negative? Here we have Cameroon and Saudi Arabia, scoreless late in the 1st half. This is really close to the chalkboard example we just talked about, but this has an interesting twist to it…AR1 has 3 different attackers that might or might not be offside. What does the AR decide? Does the AR impact the game? Is the impact positive or negative?

First decide if a Saudi attacker is guilty of an offside infraction? Back in the 14th minute of this same game, AR2 had a decision to make. Let’s watch and see if AR2 does the right thing. First decide if a Saudi attacker is guilty of an offside infraction? What action does the AR take? When does the AR make a decision? How does the decision impact the creditability of the officiating crew?

In the 4th minute of this game an AR has an impact on the game In the 4th minute of this game an AR has an impact on the game. What does the bench, that is directly behind him, think about the next 86 minutes of the game? #1 mistake we see – AR not staying perpendicular with the 2nd to last defender. Here the AR even has the cut of the grass to help. Can the AR make a correct determination of whether or not the attacker is offside at the moment the ball is passed?

“When in doubt…always go with the attacker” Here we see the US Women’s National Team playing against Germany. While you can’t see the AR, the decision and impact should be obvious. The actions of the AR are not influenced by the defender raising the arm wanting an offside call. At the moment of the pass; either the AR determined the player was onside or even with the 2nd to last defender. Or, if the AR was in doubt…protocol all AR’s should go by is… “When in doubt…always go with the attacker”

The AR makes a delayed decision to penalize for offside. Here we have a different set of circumstances in the same game involving the same AR. The AR makes a delayed decision to penalize for offside. What are the factors that influenced the decision? Would you have made the same decision?

What happens to your perspective of “perpendicular when the field is mowed diagonally? How can you adjust? Not so easy is it?

At moment of head flick-on… What happens to your perspective of “perpendicular when the field is mowed diagonally? How can you adjust? Not so easy is it?

Now Make Your Own Decisions from these video clips

How did you do?

Now watch these youth video clips and decide

Some decisions are easy

Simple decision

Offside following a throw-in

When is this defender guilty of offside?

Sometimes we MUST learn to wait and see…

Wait and see…

Delayed Decisions

Delaying decision

Once a player is offside, they can’t put themselves back onside until…

A.R.’s must be in the correct position…

Remember, judge each sequence of play on it’s own merit…

Which player actually gets the ball?

AR MUST be even (perpendicular) with 2nd to last defender to make the correct decision

How did you do this time?

A decision NOT to raise the flag Remember, A decision NOT to raise the flag Is also a decision
