County growth plans Lisa Williams - Assistant County Commissioner Support B&SG Tamsin Fudge – Head of Growth and Insight SWE Growth Conference 17 November 2018

Growth Goals! Planning for growth locally We want every county to develop a growth plan that is: Shaped to the local area Practical Deliverable Growth Goals!

Benefits of a county growth plan Having a county plan can help in lots of ways: Gets people focussed Gives direction Helps with funding opportunities Gets people working together Brings fresh ideas Gives a sense of accomplishment

B&SG good practice Bristol and South Gloucestershire’s county plan has … Been in use for 2 years Set up a task group Wrote our MGR plan Embedded MGR plan into our Strategic plan Contained lots of ideas With costs!!!! Task group refreshed annually Plan reviewed What worked well/what didn’t Plan updated New ideas and existing ideas Increase in volunteers

How to begin writing a plan You may have some ideas or a list of three things you want to do – but now it’s time to take it to the next level Step 1 – As a team look through Our plan – it’s very helpful Step 2 – Look at your local data and spot the gaps, drop-off points, successes, big waiting lists etc Step 3 – Look at the local context behind the data, gather ideas, talk to each other about what works Step 4 – In your team use Our plan to write a growth plan together

B&SG – Who’s on our team? People with existing skills Data analysis Those that have an opinion Those that are willing to attend events and talk to the public In B&SG we have a task group of 15 people Admin support Each allocated a specific task Use outside agencies

B&SG - How often do we meet? We meet three/four times a year Specific Facebook group Team members support events Biscuits and cakes 

B&SG - Where do we get your data from? We work with Region data mainly Limitations Difficult to collect locally Local data on unit teams and girl numbers Each division in our county has person who works with our County Join-us Co-ordinator Look at numbers of girls in each section Plan for the future

B&SG – How do we use the data? We look at the data and review what we need to focus attention on Retention Growth Existing volunteers Multiple roles Need local knowledge Rural/urban needs are different

Growth scenarios In groups discuss the scenario given to you: What would you do? There is no right or wrong answer! Every county/island will have a different viewpoint Remember no idea is a silly idea!!!

Delivering the plan It’s your plan, for your county/island You are responsible for making it happen Work as a team No-one is going to tell you off if it doesn’t go to plan Adapt it and improve it Stop – start - change
