Lesson Overview Learning Objective Students will identify that the use of machines and other inventions has changed the way people live. Prior Knowledge No prior knowledge required for this lesson. Resources Required Student Handout 5.1 Student Handout 5.2 Scissors Glue sticks Teacher Dialogue Resource Special Instructions This lesson is an introduction to how traditional life for Aboriginal people living in Cape York has changed. The content of this lesson focusses on why the changes have occurred e.g. technological advances. While reference is made to traditional Cape York food, clothing, transport and communication, these will be developed further in subsequent lessons. Possible Ancestral Language Connection (ALC) Links To support this section of the unit it would be invaluable to set up a sharing table where students can be encouraged to bring in items from the past that they may have access to and could talk about and share. Community members and Elders may be able to help contribute to the table. It may be possible to loan items from the local Cultural Centre or take photos of items to display in the classroom. Now, in the present, there are computers and phones which people can use to send emails. This is like writing a letter but the person would get it straight away. Now, in the present, people can communicate with one another by writing letters or sending cards. Items of all different sizes can also be sent in packages through the mail. Now, in the present, there are phones which people can use to talk to one another or to send text messages. This allows people to talk to each other no matter where they are, as long as there is reception. 9
