Reading is Magical

Why is Reading to Young Children so Magical? Let Us Count the Ways! 1.Encourages a Thirst for Knowledge and Life Long Learners 2.Enhances a Child’s Concentration 3. Develops a Child’s Imagination and Creativity 4. Builds Empathy – children begin to understand and relate to emotions as they identify with characters 5. Helps Create a Special Bond Between Parent & Child or Teacher & Class– Builds Community!  Why is Reading to Young Children so Magical? Let Us Count the Ways!

Ways to Make Kids Love Reading Children who enjoy reading not only do better in language and literacy subjects, but in all subjects! Fostering a love of reading is one of our most important goals as Kindergarten teachers and parents! *Build a Reading Tent or Fort (Kids love cozy places to read!) *Celebrate “Flashlight Friday” - Read books or post sight words around the house to read with a flashlight (Target sells finger lights in packs of 5 – super fun!) *Read to a Pet, favorite stuffed Animal, or Doll *Retell Stories Using the Felt Board App! Ways to Make Kids Love Reading *See 18 Ways Handout

Writing & Reading Are Inseparable! They Work Hand In Hand! *Children who are encouraged to write, (spelling words as they sound), develop phonemic awareness which help them learn to read. *Inventive Spelling “A number of studies demonstrate that kids who are allowed to use inventive spelling learn to write more quickly, more fluently, and with a richer vocabulary than those who work under more rigid spelling expectations.” (Kolodziej & Columba, 2005). Writing & Reading Are Inseparable! They Work Hand In Hand!

Early Reading Strategies Beyond “Sounding Out” Often sounding out is the go to advice given to new readers, but in the early stages of reading we want to get kids using a variety of cues and strategies - (Sometimes called our “Super Powers”:) *I can check the pictures. *If something doesn’t make sense or sound right, I go back to reread and try again. *I can “get my mouth ready” for the first sound and think what makes sense. *My Word Wall Words (sight words) can help me-they give me power!!!! Early Reading Strategies

Comprehension Comprehension is King! READING IS THINKING! Strategies *Asking Questions (Both parent and student questioning) *Making Connections- What does this story remind you of? *Making Predictions- What do you think will happen? If you were writing the story, what would you make happen next? Activities *Retelling Glove *Retelling Bracelet *Retelling Tower Comprehension

Reading is Magical Thank you so much for coming! Partnering with parents in education allows children to see important people in their lives working together. Children feel safer with teachers and staff who are visibly respected and trusted by their parents, and this allows them to feel comfortable and focus on learning.
