Warm Up State an appropriate null and alternate hypothesis. Clearly define the population and parameter of interest. We wish to conduct a study to investigate whether there is a real “home field advantage” in the National Football League. We will use the data for the 2012 season as a representative sample. That year the home team won 151 of the 256 games that were played.

If you sign up in another class that is ok, just let me know. Each test costs $94 (AP Capstone is $142), but if you applied for free and reduced lunch this year the test cost is $5.

Practice #1 A 2005 newspaper article reported the results of a survey of 1000 randomly selected American adults, 534 of whom reported they would rather watch a movie at home than in a theater. Is this convincing evidence for the newspaper’s claim that “a majority of American adults would rather watch movies at home?” 1) Define the null and alternate hypotheses. 2) Calculate the value of z and the p-value.

Practice #2 The county health department has designed a new campaign to encourage more people to get a flu shot. Historically 65% of the county residents get a flu shot. After conducting the campaign they surveyed 100 randomly selected residents and found that 72 of them got a flu shot. Determine if there is statistically significant evidence that the new campaign increased the proportion of residents getting a flu shot. Use the 4 step process. Use a = 0.05.

Practice #3 A 2005 study surveyed 229 randomly selected women who stated they would like to choose the gender of their baby. Imagine the authors believed, before conducting the study, that “the mothers will not choose boys and girls in equal numbers.” The results of the study are that 140 of the women said they wanted a girl and 89 said they wanted a boy. Is this convincing evidence that the authors belief is correct? Use the 4 step process. Use a = 0.01.
