Gary Clark Jr. Born and raised in Austin. Texas Started playing the guitar at age 12 Started playing in local clubs in his teens Released his first independent album in 2005 titled Tribute (Leggett) “getting dogsh*t in the mailbox, people writing ‘nigger’ on my fence outside my parent’s house, riding around in trucks [putting] Confederate flags over my fence. That was a regular occurrence.”

Song is about his experiences growing up in Austin, Texas and America: He wrote the song as a response to his frustration to racism he faced going up and continues to face.
