Hardware Created by Ed, VE7ED, ver. 1.0

Hardware Requirements COMPUTER (Linux) Windows 7 – 10 (Home or Pro, 32 or 64 bit) RADIO Amateur & Commercial Preferably one with a packet radio port TNC (Soundcard) Kantronic’s KPC3+ with ver. 9.1 firmware (RS232 or USB) ANTENNA & COAX Vertical or Beam RG58AU for short runs (25ft) LMR-400 for the longer runs CABLING Computer to TNC – USB, Serial cable DB9 to DB25, /USB to Serial adapter The cabling used will depend on the computer and TNC. TNC to Radio – RX Audio, TX Audio, PTT, Ground (shielded) Optional A+ wiring from the radio (if equipend) to the DB9 (no separate plug for DC power)

TNC - Terminal Node Controller Kantronic’s KPC3+ (ver. 9.1 firmware) What does it do? Modulates and demodulates 2 tones (Modem) at 2.75kHZ Deviation Things to know about KPC3+ ver. 9.1 It is built to a specific common standard. Uses a HDLC chip and can be run independently. (no computer required) and can be run as a K-Net node (network node) Things not to do to your EMCOM TNC! Running other software because it can change your TNC parameters like Flow, Frack, Persist, Retries, Remote settings, Users, Node settings etc.

KPC3+ Display Backup In Airmail Dumb terminal or Simple terminal you can at the CMD: prompt type “Display” This will list out all the TNC Command. You can just cut and paste from Airmail to Wordpad and save or print. Simple terminal you need to go to the log file and cut and paste to Wordpad to save or print.

KPC3 + Jumpers There are different versions of the circuit board

KPC3+ Real-Time Clock Module If your Daytime setting keeps loosing time you might consider installing a Kantronic FOX 72421 clock chip in U15 socket vs keep changing the 2032 battery. This process is not to hard to do. Turn off the TNC, Take the cover off the TNC Insert the chip the correct way Turn on the TNC and Set the Date/time using Daytime command

KPC3+ Replacing the Lithium Battery The battery is a 2032 lithium cell. I would advise not to use a dollar store battery they don’t seem to have a good life. To replace it carefully slip it out of the holder. Do not bend the tab up very much or it will no longer make contact.
