Hello, my name is Miss/Mister___. I’m your ESL teacher this year for grade____ . This is _________ who is translating for me today. Today I want to share some information about what to expect in our classes.

Slide 2.Agenda Book *This book is our Home-School connection. Everyday your child should bring this book to school and home. Your child will write the present date and any special notes to go home will be put in here. *Please use this this book to communicate ALL your concerns about your child’s learning in our ESL program. We emphasize that this should be the first method of communication as I can see this every day. So I can reply as soon as possible. *Please feel welcome to write in either English or Mandarin in this Agenda Book.

Slide 3.GREEN Daily Workbook *In Grade __, you can expect to see your child coming home with homework every day. Daily homework officially started this week. Students should be completing this homework in their GREEN workbook. (For grade 2-5 parents you can mention that the routine will be the same so that you don’t have to spend too much time elaborating on it.) *Homework assignments are meant to be given as EXTRA practise. So, homework will not be used as an academic report card mark. *This book will be brought home every day (Monday through Thursday) to complete the homework at home. Your child should return this book by Friday morning. *Remembering to bring the daily workbook every day and doing homework every night will teach your children key learning skills like responsibility and initiative. We hope as the semester goes on, your child can learn this routine independently. *In cases where your child struggles to complete the homework, please encourage them to try their best because this work should be review from class. You may help your child with homework; however most should be done independently. *If your child cannot complete the homework, please sign the homework or write a note so that we are able to support best.

Slide 4. BLUE Journal *The Blue Book is the Journal. This book stays in class for students to practise creative writing using the social conventions of the week. *This book will go home on Fridays for you to have a look at your child’s writing practise each week. However, this book needs to be returned to class on Monday.

Slide 5. YELLOW Weekend Workbook *The Yellow Book is the Weekend Homework book. Over the weekend we usually give reading assignments. Please have your child do the recommended reading homework response in this book. *This book will be sent home on Friday only. Your child needs to return the book on Monday.

Slide 6. Newsletter *Every Friday, there will be a newsletter posted for you in both English and Mandarin. We will write about any ESL news here. *In addition, please use this to see the next week’s new words and social conventions. This is a good way to become familiar with the upcoming content for each new unit.

Assessment & Evaluation Slide 7. Assessment and Evaluation *This is our document from the Ministry of Education in Ontario which we follow when assessing and evaluating your child’s work. The document is called Growing for Success. *This outlines the philosophy of how we assess and evaluate students’ knowledge, skills, and understanding. As this document is very detailed, today I will briefly talk about our report card.

ESL Grading Outline for term 1 Grade 1 no exam in term 1 Slide 8. Report Card Picture *This is a section from our report card. The top picture is grade 1. (For grade 1 parents you can mention that there is NO EXAM in the first semester.) *In ESL there are 3 strands: Oral Communication, Reading, and Writing. Each strand is weighted evenly. There is also a small section for the exam mark, which is only 10%. *Learning a new language takes a lot of effort. Please remind your child that trying their best is of most importance. Grade 2
