Antigone Self Review

Please get out the following Highlighters: Yellow, Blue, Green, Pink Red Pen (or colored pencil/small marker) Purple Pen (or colored pencil/small marker)

Review Step 1: MLA Formatting Basics Use a red pen or colored pencil to mark MLA errors. Is their heading correct? Fakey McStudent Mr. Kirkley / Mr. Olejack World Literature, 4th Block 7 October 2018 Is the essay in Times New Roman/12 pt. font? Is the essay double-spaced? Does each page of the essay have a page number with their last name? Ex: McStudent 2 Does the essay have a unique, ORIGINAL title?

Review Step 2: Works Cited Page Use a red pen to mark incorrectly formatted sources. Use the link on the blog to add a Works Cited Page to your essay. LAST PAGE.

PREFACE: As you are editing, if you find that you are missing something that you are supposed to be identifying, make a note in the appropriate place on the essay marking the missing element.

Review Step 3: Introductory Paragraph Get a YELLOW, BLUE, and PINK highlighter. Introduction to Topic: (YELLOW) (1-2 sentences; What is your paper about? Conflict? Loyalty? Family? Laws and Justice? Tragedy? Write an opening sentence that introduces your reader to this broad concept.) 2. Provide Background / Transition to Thesis (BLUE) (Provide context for your opening topic. Introduce important characters, the author, and the name of the text; remember to italicize the title of the play. Provide a 1-2 sentence summary of the relevant plot points to your essay.) 2-4 sentences total 3. Thesis/Claim Statement (PINK) (address the prompt directly through the use of keywords; this will be the last sentence of your intro): ONE SENTENCE

Review Step 4: Body (Topic Sentences) Get out a yellow highlighter. Highlight each topic sentence of the paragraphs. Check the content - does each one connect to the thesis? Or is it simply a line of summary? Eliminate summary and revise each topic sentence to connect to the thesis.

Review Step 5: Body (Evidence) Get out a green highlighter. Highlight the textual evidence in green. Go back and number each piece of evidence with a circle. There should be AT LEAST SIX pieces of evidence in the essay. Check that each piece of evidence includes a CITATION. This is the lead-in: “Here is the quotation” (Sophocles 456). IF YOU ARE MISSING ANY OF THESE ELEMENTS, MAKE A NOTE.

Review Step 6: Body (Commentary/Interpretation) Get out a blue highlighter. Highlight the commentary/interpretation in blue. These are statements that further explain/illustrate/justify examples provided. This should display a ratio of 1:3; for every quote you have used, make sure that your own voice reigns through thorough, detailed interpretations.

Review Step 7: Conclusion Conclusion: get out a pink and blue highlighter Rephrase Thesis (In different words, restate your thesis statement) Answer the “So what?” Question (Why should a modern reader care about this paper? How does it connect with issues in today’s world? Consider using a theme statement here to discuss what the play teaches us about what it means to be human.)

Review Step 8: Final Steps Put a question mark over words that have questionable spelling or grammar usage. Using a brace around each paragraph (}), write the number of sentences in the margin. WordWordWordWordWordWord. WordWordWordWord.WordWord 3

Review Step 9: First Read http://www.cobbk12.org/ Review Step 9: First Read Use a purple pen to circle any use of… 1st person (I, me, we, us, etc.) 2nd person (you) Contractions (they’re, can’t, won’t, shouldn’t, etc.) Follow by a very sad face.

Review Step 10: Final Steps (Embedding Quotes) Review the lead-in guide. In a final read, go back through the essay and look at your lead-ins and in-text citations. Write a note in the margin with an arrow pointing to the lead-in or in-text citation offering feedback. *Sample In-text citations: Romantic poetry is characterized by the "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (Wordsworth 263). When it comes to technology, we “need to be comfortable enough with technology tools and services that we can help point our patrons in the right direction, even if we aren’t intimately familiar with how the device works” (King).
