Presentation transcript:

Critical Thinking Today you will Write down the Numbers (multiple answers) of the correct answers. Bring them up to the Podium with your name on them. No calculators and No Talking. You will have 60 seconds to Answer and 10 additional seconds to place them on the Podium. If They are Not on the Podium in 70 seconds, you do not get credit. No Talking!!

Analogies Which of the following comparisons are analogies? An analogy means that the relationship of each pair of numbers must be the same. In these sentences : means “is to” and :: means “as” 4 : 8 :: 32 : 64 (4 is to 8 as 32 is to 64) 103 : 301 :: 4777 : 7744 .75 : ¾ :: .40 : 2/5 17 : 21 :: 1,332 : 1,336 3/7 : 7/3 :: 71/42 : 42/71 5 : 55 :: 2 : 23

Answer Items 1, 3, 4, and 5 are analogies. Item 2 is not an analogy because the order of digits in the first pair is reversed, the second is not. Item 6 is not an analogy because the first relationship can be written 1 :11; the second cannot.

Goals for the Day I can analyze the effect details have on a sentence and how an author may create a desired effect. I can distinguish between various AP question types. I can utilize annotation as a tool to help me better understand a text.

Quick Vocabulary Quiz 1. Open to Socrative 2. Login to Bauer2016 3. Type your first name and last name 4. You have exactly five minutes to complete the quiz.

Voice Lesson – Detail Consider: To those who saw him often he seemed almost like two men: one the merry monarch of the hunt and banquet and procession, the friend of the children, the patron of every kind of sport; the other the cold, acute observer of the audience chamber or the Council, watching vigilantly, weighing arguments, refusing except under the stress of great events to speak his own mind. - Winston Churchill, “King Henry VIII,” Churchill’s History of the English Speaking Peoples Discuss: Churchill draws attention to the contrasting sides of Henry VIII through detail. How is the impact of the sentence strengthened by the order of the details’ presentation? What is Churchill’s attitude toward Henry? What specific details reveal this attitude? Apply: Think of someone you know who has two strong sides to his/her personality. Using Churchill’s sentence as a model, write a sentence which captures – through detail – these two sides. Share you sentence with a partner.
