Welcome… Mel Berry Chair, Active Notts Hello and welcome to the Notts PE, Sport and Physical Activity Conference 2018. We are delighted to see so many of you here for an exciting day of inspiration, innovation, learning, networking and best practice. Building on the success of last years conference which was aimed at PE Coordinators, this years conference will also cater for Headteachers, Governors, KS1 and Foundation teachers as well as PE Coordinators. Before I pass on to John for his keynote it is worth sharing with you the reason why we are hosting this event today and how it fits in with our remit.

Young People Stats 30.6% of children aged 10-11 are classified as overweight or obese (In Nottingham it’s 37.1%) (NHS England, 2014-15) 43.3% of 15 year olds are sedentary for 10 hours or more on a weekday, rising to 71.6% at the weekend Young People are a priority “give all children all young people a foundation of competence and enjoyment so they can positively engage in physical activity and sport during their childhood and beyond” (Getting Active Together) Young people are a priority as some of the stats as you can see are quite alarming. We are committed to finding ways and support to “give all children and young people a foundation of competence and enjoyment so they can positively engage in physical activity and sport during their childhood and beyond” Enabling young people to become active and stay active is a priority for us and we work closely with a range of partners on this.

Programmes School Games Active Lives Children and Young People Survey Primary School Support PE and Sport Premium Guidance https://www.activenotts.org.uk/primary-school-pe CPD Opportunities Individual support to schools Mapping You may have heard of some of the programmes we lead on across the County and in doing so, we work closely with School Games Organisers. These are: School Games Active Lives and Primary School Support Leadership and volunteering opportunities All of these programmes align and support the delivery of the “Getting Active Together“ strategy. I am going to briefly touch on all of these but if you require any further information on any of them please contact a member of the Active Notts team or your School Games Organiser. School Games – Active Notts are responsible for the organization and delivery of the Level 3 County School Games events. We work closely with the School Games Organiser network to agree a programme of competition and participation events which provide opportunities for young people to reach their personal best. Active Lives – Active Notts is responsible for engaging, encouraging and support schools to complete the Active Lives Children and Young People survey. The survey is designed by Sport England, the Department for Education (DfE), the Department for Health (DfH) and the Department for Digital Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) to gain insight and data on how children engage with sport and physical activity. The study will provide Sport England, Government and other partners with a broad and deep understanding of participation in, and attitudes towards, sport and physical activity, shaping future policy and investment. Each term around 50 schools in Notts are selected to take part, it isn’t compulsory but I would like to use this platform to advocate the importance of the survey and to strongly encourage schools to engage with it. With the insight gained through the survey national policy can be reflective of need and it really will be used to inform decisiosn on future funding and policy. With the PE and Sport Premium not being committed beyond 2020 it couldn’t be more crucial to gain the engagement of schools in this survey. The most relevant to days agenda is Primary School Support – £4,570,560 of PE and Sport Premium funding is coming into Notts direct to Primary schools ringfenced for PE, Sport and Physical activity. A substantial amount of money and with it a responsibility to ensure there is sustainable change in schools across the 5 DfE key indicators as outlined by DfE. PE and Sport Premium Guidance We play a key role in providing guidance to schools on how to maximise the impact of the funding whilst also influencing, promoting and advocating clearly to schools and decision makers the power of PE, sport and physical activity. You should have received a copy of the guidance booklet via your SGO electronically and hardcopy for 17-18. In light of recent announcements we are in the process of updating the guidance and will resend electronically via the SGO network as soon as possible Conference and Central CPD Programme Using the funding to make sustainable change in schools is critical. We play a role in identifying, promoting and organising high quality CPD products and opportunities' that link schools to national and local programmes and projects targeted at primary school children. Todays conference is a prime example of this and I hope delegates leave today with increased confidence and knowledge to positively impact on young people back in school. Support to Schools and Mapping We are also tasked with signposting and supporting schools in helping them use the funding to put development plans in place to develop or add to the PE, physical activity and sport activities that your school already offers and build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future. Active Notts is also responsible for checking schools websites to ensure they have the correct information published as required by the government, this year its by 31st July 2019.

Active Lives Children and Young People Survey Active Lives Survey Active Lives Children and Young People Survey National survey - largest of its kind measuring young people’s behavior and attitude to physical activity 11th Dec – first set of results out Helps to build a case of need to support future policy and investment into school PE & Sport (currently £4.5m in Notts) Please engage if asked! Each term around 50 schools in Notts are selected to take part, it isn’t compulsory but I would like to use this platform to advocate the importance of the survey and to strongly encourage schools to engage with it. With the insight gained through the survey national policy can be reflective of need and it really will be used to inform decisions on future funding and policy. With the PE and Sport Premium not being committed beyond 2020 it couldn’t be more crucial to gain the engagement of schools in this survey. The school receives a detailed report with the insight and a true understanding from their pupils. Which can help to inform strategies to deliver an engaging physical activity offer, both within the curriculum and through additional, potential revenue building streams for the school. The report can be used as evidence for Ofsted and future funding opportunities. Collectively it helps to shape the national picture and policies and build an evidence base for future investment, which will be important to build when considering the PE & Sport Premium is not being committed beyond 2020. The information will also help to inform ourselves, Local Authorities, Education Departments and Multi-academy Trusts plus public health to help support where the need has been identified. There’s a small cash incentive, which can be spent by the school – every little helps… Primary School Support The most relevant to days agenda is Primary School Support – £4,570,560 of PE and Sport Premium funding is coming into Notts direct to Primary schools ringfenced for PE, Sport and Physical activity. A substantial amount of money and with it a responsibility to ensure there is sustainable change in schools across the 5 DfE key indicators as outlined by DfE.

Thank you The conference has been designed to inspire delegates to demand the best experiences in PE, sport and physical activity for their pupils and utilise its power on whole school priorities.· Happy, healthy, active pupils make better learners! Use the time to learn from each other by sharing best practice, use the information shared with you to reflect on your current situation, check and challenge your plans to invest the sport premium in future to maximise the impact across the 5 key indicators and as a collective discuss how you can work together to give “…all children and young people a foundation of competence and enjoyment so they can get involved in physical activity and sport in a positive and confident way during their childhood and beyond”. Thank you
