TECH TOWN HALL -David Kettler, Divisional Administrator of Scrutineering – Central Division

TECH TOWN HALL This session will: Be an open forum for scrutineers, stewards, and others to contribute ideas, methods, and best practices Be oriented toward improving tech at road racing events Be informative - rules clarification, procedures, and an opportunity to exchange information.

Tech practices vary… + Region to Region, Division to Division, Track to Track. Use of Tech Sheets Fuel Testing. Who does it? Who doesn’t? Why not? Express Tech! Scale operation hours. Friday night? Regional Rules – classes. How to share these rules?

Dissemination of info across the country Issues and obstacles to communication – -Geography -No current National Administrator of Scrutineering -Elimination of Majors Conference Series Chief Technical Inspectors -Access to the latest manufacturer data. (BMW Shift lockout)

Dissemination of info across the country… Why is this important? Competitors want rules interpreted uniformly across the country! Not only consistent interpretation, but more compliance. – “They never check that at our races.”

Dissemination of info across the country… + Ways we communicate – GCR, monthly editions FastTrack Tech Bulletins and Advisories Log Book Database. http://www.clubracingboard.com/logbook/ How many are using this?

Ways we communicate – (continued) + Technical Training sessions Divisional Spring Training National Staff webinars. How to navigate the GCR, others. What is planned in 2019? Hands on at Region Open House Hands on at Runoffs National Convention!

Ways we communicate – continued Social Media, text, email Informal communication – tech inspector to tech inspector Monthly Runoffs Tech calls (Discuss ways to work between CRB, National, Category Supervisors, Advisory Committees) How do other specialties communicate and share info?

RULES CLARIFICATION AND INTREPRETATION + What do you have questions about? New GTX Class SMG into AS Roll cage checking procedure

What has been protested last year? List and discuss. Runoffs? Results…

How can Tech get better organized? Forms Assignments Meetings Supplies Tools Procedures

How can we help competitors be compliant? -Know the rules and have the latest information so we can answer their questions. -Inspect their cars for compliance – post qualifying and post race. Look at their cars for items not on the approved compliance plan. Point things out and suggest they make changes with no penalties. -Refer them to subject matter experts – Engine builders, prep shops, car constructors. Suggest resources you know might be at the track. Examples: Starter on SM, Nissan 350Z.

What have we checked? What has been on our Tech plans? List.

What have we found to be non-compliant? List.

What have we learned at the Runoffs that can be applied at other races? List/Discussion

What tools have we developed and used to do compliance ? SM Compliance Kits. SM Stall Test Kits. Whistler Gear Ratio checker Class specific tools – from Enterprises

What can Tech do to improve? + Eliminate Tech! (just kidding) “TECH IS NOT THE BAD GUY” – Tech helps insure a level playing field. Attitude! (Customer Service – Steve Pence) More knowledge and experience Add more resources – Tech Staff Recruiting and Retention. What are you doing to get more tech people? What else can we do to get and keep people? Get more access to internet at race tracks Get trained SFI Certification

How can we help other specialties? Tech Plan to Chief Steward Check tow hooks Can we eliminate printed tech cards from T&S? How?

Where will Tech be in 5 years? Electric and Hybrid cars? Safety equipment? New FIA Helmet standard, Right side nets, safer barrier material on driver side roll cage What else is new or in the works?
