CAN WE CONSIDER THEM AS CAPSTONE PROJECTS? MILITARY INSTITUTE of SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY (MIST)

SCOPE Definition of capstone project Objectives of Capstone Project What is Involved in a Capstone? Why to Assign Capstones? Duties and Responsibilities of the Proponents Capstone project Design module for ME Department Conclusion MILITARY INSTITUTE of SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY (MIST)

The Capstone Project is a way of determining whether students are ready to graduate. MILITARY INSTITUTE of SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY (MIST)

Definition “It is a multi-faceted project that serves as a culminating academic and intellectual experience for students.” It is similar to a thesis, but usually results not only in a report, but in a product, a performance or in giving a presentation. MILITARY INSTITUTE of SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY (MIST)

Objectives of Capstone Project The subject will involve students in bringing together and integrating knowledge and skills in the course as a whole. Reinforcing and developing competencies that have not been sufficiently emphasized in the fundamental subjects. Defining a substantial engineering study or design task and carrying it to completion within a specified time and to a professional standard. MILITARY INSTITUTE of SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY (MIST)

Completing a comprehensive written and bound report that places the project in context, defines its objectives, and describes the work done and the resulting recommendations. Bridging the gap between the undergraduate studies and the professional future. Demonstrating initiative and creativity, and taking pride in the achievement of a difficult task. MILITARY INSTITUTE of SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY (MIST)

What is Involved in a Capstone The first aspect of the capstone experience is to choose a topic. The worst topics are sometimes considered for capstones, are those that require a lot of statistical analysis and that involve complex concepts that listeners find hard to grasp. The best projects involve application of a principle, not just exploration of a proposition. MILITARY INSTITUTE of SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY (MIST)

This proposal should introduce the project. Students have to submit a proposal to their advisor or to a board of advisors. This proposal should introduce the project. It will explain the existing theories and state the hypothesis. It will give a review of the literature including research methodology. It will also include alternate proposals if the one they present is not accepted. MILITARY INSTITUTE of SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY (MIST)

Capstone experiences are labor and time intensive. Once the proposal is accepted, the proposing students will begin researching the subject. This may involve reading literature on the subject and assimilating the findings. Capstone experiences are labor and time intensive. They are usually listed in the academic catalog as courses for which they receive credit and which last from a semester to a year. MILITARY INSTITUTE of SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY (MIST)

Why to Assign Capstones Although the projects do showcase the educational accomplishments. It is intended to encourage students to use the critical thinking skills they have acquired through their degree programs to solve problems. Program also want to see their graduates develop and use public speaking skills, writing proficiency. MILITARY INSTITUTE of SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY (MIST)

Formation of Project Teams : Each project team shall be composed of 4 to 5 members. Each single member may also be assessed on project proposal, feasibility studies, intellectual property, teamwork, budget, schedule, management, professional communications (i.e. reports, presentations), planning, design, implementation, deployment, and testing. Students will be expected to meet a number of strictly enforced milestones and to take considerable initiative in realizing specific goals. MILITARY INSTITUTE of SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY (MIST)

Duties and Responsibilities of the Proponents Keep informed of the Capstone Project Guidelines and Policies. Keep informed of the schedule of project activities and deadlines posted by Dept. Student to submit on time all deliverables specified by the Dept. Submit on time all requirements identified by the thesis defense panel during the defense. Schedule regular meetings (at least once a month) with the subject adviser and project adviser throughout the duration of the thesis / project. MILITARY INSTITUTE of SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY (MIST)
