5.6 The Northwest Rebellion - Beginnings In December 1873, the Métis adopted the “Laws of St. Laurent” Governed all aspects of life in the settlement The man in charge of the main HBC post (Fort Carleton) in the area was Lawrence Clarke Believed in the inferiority of the Métis and he used his position to lower the Métis standard of living The winter of 1874-1875 was difficult for the Métis Impossible to make pemmican which meant a loss of food and income They were now deprived the right to make their own laws and conserve their livelihood Socials 10 4/4/2019
