THE FUTURE: FUTURE PERFECT, FUTURE CONTINUOUS FUTURE TIME CLAUSES

FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS Let’s have a “flash forward”. Imagine yourself this time next Saturday. It’s afternoon, so .....what do you think I’ll be doing? This time (at 17:00) next Saturday, I’ll be having a siesta That’s something in progress at some time in the future. It’ll have started before 17:00 and it’ll continue after 17:00

FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS Form: Subj +WILL+BE+V –ING Meaning: action in progress in a point in the future. Emphasis on the PROCESS By 9:00 tomorrow I’ll be passing the test.

Let’s practice! I’ll be watching football this time on Sunday He won’t be studying English this time tomorrow What will you be doing in three years time?

FUTURE PERFECT

What will John’s future be like? By the time John is 20, he will have planted, fertilized and harvested a crop of cannabis. Two years later the FBI will have arrested him, put him on trial and sent him to jail. So, when he’s 22, he will have been sent to jail

FUTURE PERFECT Form: Subj+ WILL+HAVE+ V PAST PARTICIPLE Meaning: completed action before a point in the future. Emphasis on the RESULT By 9:00 tomorrow I’ll have passed my test.

Let’s practice! What’s the meaning of these sentences? When we get to the cinema, the film will have started John won’t have found anywhere to park Will you have finished this tomorrow afternoon? What will you have finished by the end of this year?

FUTURE TIME CLAUSES Complete this sentence: We’ll go out when he ....... comes After when, before, after, until, as soon as we use present time, even though we refer to future time (we use present Subjunctive in Spanish) I’ll be here until she arrives (‘hasta que ella llegue) As soon as my dad comes, we’ll start eating (‘tan pronto como mi papá venga’)
