HIV and AIDS By: Tailyn Shields

HIV HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus HIV targets the body’s immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T cells), which help the immune system fight off infections

AIDS AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome A disease in which there is a severe loss of the body’s cellular immunity, greatly lowering the resistance to infection and malignancy

What is a virus? A virus is a biological agent that reproduces the cells of a living host Many viruses can be fatal A virus reproduces by attaching itself to a specific hist and injects its genetic material

Where did HIV and AIDS come from? One of the earliest documented HIV infections was found in a preserved blood sample in 1959 from a man named Leopoldville in Belgian Congo It has believed to have originated in Africa

How are HIV and AIDS contracted? HIV is an STD (sexually transmitted disease) It is spread through sexual intercourse and using some medical equipment, like sharing needles It can also be transmitted from mother to child

Where was the first recorded case of HIV? The first recorded case of HIV is in Belgian Congo

Where was the first recorded case of HIV in America? The first recorded case in America is in San Francisco, California

What are the symptoms of HIV and AIDS? The symptoms of HIV and AIDS aren’t found right away, it could take ten or more years to show signs The most common symptoms include flu-like symptoms, thrush (thick, white coating on your tongue or mouth), sore throat, and bad yeast infections Also, feeling dizzy and lightheaded, fast weight loss, and easily bruising

How long can it take for HIV to develop into AIDS? About fifty percent of people with HIV develop AIDS after ten years It takes anywhere from months to years

How many people have died of HIV and AIDS worldwide? As of 2017, 35.4 million people have died from HIV and AIDS

How many people are infected with HIV and AIDS? As of 2017, about 36.9 million are living with HIV and AIDS

How many people have died from HIV and AIDS in the United States? As of 2016, 15,807 people have died from HIV and AIDS

Celebrity HIV/AIDS deaths Rock Hudson Freddie Mercury Anthony Perkins Keith Haring Arthur Ashe Liberace Gia Carangi Elizabeth Glaser Perry Ellis

Celebrities with HIV Magic Johnson Danny Pintauro Greg Louganis Chuck Panozzo

How to avoid HIV Get tested/treated regularly Know your partner's HIV status Protected sex Don’t inject drugs

Treatments and Medicines SYMTUZA is an HIV treatment that has a high barrier to HIV drug resistance This means that if you miss a few doses, your body will most likely not reject it Antiretroviral therapy is a treatment that slows down the progression of HIV and keeps you healthy for many years

Conclusion HIV is a very serious, dangerous virus with no permanent cure HIV is fatal and should not be risked Do everything you can to avoid the infection (see slide 16) Start treatment as soon as possible after diagnosis Don’t miss doses of your HIV treatment, it could limit your choices of treatments in the future
