What’s today’s lesson? Creative Thinker TASK Listen to the music lyrics. What do you think today’s lesson is about? Creative Thinker

I think I’m a Clone Now Isn't it strange Feels like I'm lookin' in the mirror What would people say If only they knew that I was Part of some geneticist's plan (plan-plan-plan) Born to be a carbon copy man (man-man-man) There in a petri dish late one night They took a donor's body cell and fertilized a human egg and so I say I think I'm a clone now There's always two of me just a-hangin' around I think I'm a clone now 'Cause every chromosome is a hand-me-down Look at the way We go out walking close together I guess you could say I'm really beside myself I still remember how it began (gan-gan-gan) They produced a carbon copy man (man-man-man) Born in a science lab late one night Without a mother or a father, just a test tube and a womb with a view I think I'm a clone now (a clone now) There's always two of me just a-hangin' around I think I'm a clone now (a clone now) 'Cause every chromosome is a hand-me-down I think I'm a clone now (a clone now) And I can stay at home while I'm out of town I think I'm a clone now (a clone now) 'Cause every pair of genes is a hand-me-down Signing autographs for my fans Come and meet the carbon copy man Livin' in stereo, it's all right Well I can be my own best friend and I can send myself for pizza so I say I think I'm a clone now Another one of me's always hangin' around I think I'm a clone now 'Cause every chromosome is a hand-me-down I think I'm a clone now (a clone now) I've been on Oprah Winfrey - I'm world renowned I think I'm a clone now (a clone now) And every pair of genes is a hand-me-down I think I'm a clone now (a clone now) That's my genetic twin always hangin' around I think I'm a clone now (a clone now) 'Cause every chromosome is a hand-me-down I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)

Cloning Team Worker Reflective Learner Effective Participator Self L.O: Understand cloning methods and discuss issues associated with cloning Grade 4: Describe how to take stem and leaf cuttings of plants. Define the term clone, and use a diagram to describe why embryo transplants are clones. Grade 6: Describe the benefits for plant growers of reproduction using cuttings or tissue culture rather than seeds. Describe how embryo transplants are undertaken, and why they produce clones. Grade 8: Explain the benefits of embryo transplants over sexual reproduction for farmers. Compare and contrast tissue culture in plants and embryo transplantation in animals. Boardworks GCSE Science: Biology Asexual reproduction Boardworks GCSE Science: Biology Cloning In asexual reproduction, a single organism makes a copy of itself with exactly the same genetic code. There is no fusing of gametes or mixing of genetic information, and so no variation occurs. The new organism is a clone of the original. Organisms that reproduce asexually include: many plants, such as spider plants, strawberries and potatoes, produce bulbs or runners for asexual reproduction micro-organisms, such as bacteria and yeast some insects, such as aphids. 4

Boardworks GCSE Science: Biology Taking cuttings Boardworks GCSE Science: Biology Cloning A plant can easily and quickly be cloned by taking a cutting. The new plants are genetically identical to the parent plant. This is a fast and cheap way of cloning. cutting dipped in rooting powder and planted stem cut from parent plant The problem with this method is that it cannot produce many clones at once. 5

Tissue Culture Another way of cloning plants is by tissue culture, also called micropropagation. It works with small pieces of plants, called explants. These are grown in vitro using sterile agar jelly that contains plant hormones and nutrients. This makes tissue culture more expensive and difficult to do than taking cuttings.

TISSUE CULTURE OR CUTTINGS? Requires a parent plant TISSUE CULTURE OR CUTTINGS? Is an easier method Can produce many clones at once Is cheaper Is a way of cloning plants Uses nutrients Is a difficult method Uses large pieces of plant Is more expensive Uses a tiny piece of plant Uses a sterile agar jelly TISSUE CULTURE CUTTINGS Uses plant hormones
