AP Literature Exam Review Literary Terms

The heart of the matter… Almost every question or prompt in the AP exam will expect two things of you: an extensive and detailed knowledge of Literary Terms and the ability to comprehend literature on a college level. Tonight we will focus on the former.

What are literary terms? This is a generic term for all vocabulary surrounding prose and poetry. Just as a biology exam would expect you to know specific vocabulary, the Literature exam expects you to know most of these terms.

Terms present in all literature Conflict Man vs. Man Man vs. Nature Man vs. Himself Man vs. Machine Theme Setting Diction Plot Character/s/ization Imagery Mood (how you feel) Tone (how the author feels) Point of View 1st Person 2nd Person 3rd Person Omniscient or Limited Terms present in all literature

Most Common Poetry Terms (often called devices) Meter Rhyme*/Rhyme Scheme Alliteration*/Consonance* Assonance* Verse Stanza / line *Can also be in prose.

Other terms you might see. Allegory Allusion Analogy Euphemism Parallelism Flashback/Foreshadowing Hyperbole Irony Kennings/Metonymy Metaphor/Simile Onomatopoeia Paradox Personification Symbol Satire Syntax

What you need: A complete knowledge of the terms present in all literature and the ability to label and discuss those terms in a variety of literature. An intimate knowledge of at least 8-10 devices in order to apply them to literature in the essays. A working knowledge of somewhere around 20 devices so that you are not caught off guard in the multiple choice section of the exam.

Suggestions for studying: Create a list of devices and your own definitions for them (based on the real definitions). Find difficult pieces of literature and practice labeling all of the 10 terms that are always in literature and 8 additional terms that you choose as your favorites. Repeat…repeat…repeat

Enrichment Assignment Write a paragraph response (5 sentences per paragraph in length) about our session today and working with other students. Be sure to answer all of the following questions. How did your learning in this live session compare with your experience in learning on your own in the course or in a traditional classroom? Describe your comfort level in participating in the collaboration activity. Would you describe yourself as being a contributor of information or a receiver of information during the session?  Explain. How did the use of technology affect your learning experience during the session? Paragraph
