GCSE LEVEL PE Lesson 09 A healthy active lifestyle and your cardiovascular system C.V System 2

With your partner; Extension Connector With your partner; Identify the 3 immediate effects of exercise on the cardiovascular system? Can you explain why this occur? Extension What is the effect of adrenaline?

3 Immediate Effects of Exercise Increased Heart Rate Increased Blood Pressure Systolic and Diastolic Pressure

Key Words Physiological Cardiovascular 4

Big Picture All students will work individually and as a group to find new information about the cardiovascular system and exercise. All students will be involved in teaching others about their area of specialism. 5

Learning Outcomes All students will be able to identify and explain the four physiological effects of exercise. Most students will be able to identify and explain the effects of lactic acid on the body. All students will be able to identify four effects of regular and long term exercise on the cardiovascular system. Most students will be able to explain the effects of regular exercise on the cardiovascular system. All students will be able to identify the effects of lifestyle on the cardiovascular system. 6

Task 1 – 4 Physiological Effects on the Body? Push the chairs in to make room. Students jog on the spot for several minutes. Can you identify the 4 physiological effects of exercise on the body? Breathing becomes faster and deeper Body Temperature Increases Begin to sweat and body requires fluids Muscles begin to ache

Task 2 – Lactic Acid What is lactic acid? Why is it produced by the body? How is it removed? Is this a physiological or cardiovascular response? Extension What two fuels give energy to muscles? Is there any way of avoiding a build up of lactic acid? Is cramp linked to the production of lactic acid? What can an athlete do to avoid cramp?

Task 3 - Effects of regular and long term exercise on the cardiovascular system. Have a conversation with the person next to you. Is exercise is good for you? Explain why? Take notes. Record responses on the whiteboard.

Effects of regular exercise on the cardiovascular system Decreased Resting Heart Rate Heart Rate Recovery Increased Stroke Volume Cardiac Output Effects on blood pressure Healthy veins and arteries Causes of coronary heart disease How can you reduce the risk of high blood pressure

Task 4 – Effects of regular exercise on the cardiovascular system Students work in small groups to identify and develop the key information for their area. This information must be in bullet point style. 3-5 minutes Students to present this new information to their peers. 2 minutes to explain to each group. Teacher led rotation

Effects of lifestyle on the cardiovascular system Have a conversation with the person next to you. What is meant by the term lifestyle? What factors could effect the cardiovascular system? Take notes. Record responses on the whiteboard.
