Motion & Forces Learning Goal 4 3 2 1 In addition to level 3, I am able to make in-depth inferences and applications that go beyond what was taught in class. I am able to explain the following basic principles and concepts of physics: Force Motion Mass Velocity Speed Acceleration Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion Distance-Time Graphs Velocity-Time Graphs I am able to define and identify: With help, I can perform at level 2/3.

Distance-Time and Velocity-Time Graphs

Introduction to Physics Stations

STATION 1: VELOCITY TIME GRAPH Describe the motion happening in the graph below:

STATION 2: SPEED, ACCELERATION, VELOCITY Write down the following definitions: Speed: The distance an object travels in a given amount of time. Velocity: Speed in a given direction. Acceleration: a change in velocity in a period of time.

STATION 3: RELATIVE MOTION Watch the animation showing relative motion. How is motion different for each perspective? http://www.classzone.com/books/ml_science_shar e/vis_sim/mfm05_pg7_relmotion/mfm05_pg7_rel motion.html

STATION 4: DISTANCE TIME GRAPH Describe the motion happening in the graph below:

STATION 5: MOTION Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion states that an unbalanced force acting on an object causes the object to accelerate in the direction of the force. Explain what you think this law means in your own words.

STATION 6: Using a Spring Scale A spring scale can measure the amount of force an object has due to its mass and pull of gravity. Find the force of the three objects at your table and record their force in Newtons on the data chart. Object Force 1. 2. 3.

STATION 7: Isaac Newton Watch the video about Isaac Newton and write down three things you learned. https://safeshare.tv/x/UuFAfD7Krhk

STATION 8: Newton’s 1st Law of Motion Newton’s 1st Law of Motion states that an object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion unless acted on by an unbalanced force. Explain what you think this law means in your own words.
