Bridges to learning leadership academy Summer Adventures in Learning (SAIL) Program at Providence Elementary School, Summer 2018

What is “sail” A Summer Program designed to prevent summer learning loss. In 2012, a group of area Birmingham funders joined forces to address the challenge of summer learning loss and created a partnership called SAIL (Summer Adventures in Learning). The goal of the collaborative was to create a simpler, more centralized process to provide grants to local summer enrichment programs. The Community Foundation of Birmingham found that summer learning loss contributes to the achievement gap between low-income students and their higher income peers. While all children lose up to two months of math skills during summer vacation, low-income students are at risk of losing an additional two months in reading achievement. The SAIL Partnership model meets regularly to determine the best way to strengthen summer programs. The focus is to provide programs throughout the summer months where students can explore new interests and skills as well as gain the support they need to prevent summer learning loss. http://www.cfbham.org/for-nonprofits/other-opportunities/summer-adventures-in-learning/

“SAIL” For Madison county area schools Huntsville City Schools, Madison County Schools, Madison City Schools and the Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville and The Schools Foundation have developed a partnership to provide summer programs modeled after the Birmingham initiative. In 2017 the Community Foundation secured funders who granted monies for sites in Madison County, Madison City, and Huntsville City (Village of Promise). For Summer 2018, Huntsville City Schools, directly, has been awarded a grant in the amount of $30,000 for a program to be held at Providence Elementary School. Additionally, Huntsville City Schools’ students will not only have an opportunity to participate in a SAIL Program at Providence but also students who attend Williams P8 through The Boys and Girls Club of North Alabama and/or participate in the Village of Promise program.

SAIL At Providence “bridges to learning leadership academy” Charged with finding a curriculum that is different from the school year but still promotes learning focusing on allowing students to explore new interests and skills as well as receive the support they need to prevent summer learning loss. The proposed program “Bridges to Learning Leadership Academy” was awarded $30,000 to provide an exciting experience for students. The Providence program will include a partnership with the American Baseball Foundation of Birmingham. ABF has an academic curriculum (BASIC) to address the issue of summer learning loss. The curriculum was created with the help of the Learning and Curriculum Department of UAB and includes over 275 lessons in math, reading, and science, all sports-related academics for a four/five-week program. https://youtu.be/kFSrhfu6DPQ The program is designed for students in grades 3-5. A total of 60-80 students will be invited to attend this program based on teacher recommendations and end of the year progress. Staff: Five Teachers (Reading, Math, STEM, and Instructional Sports Teachers), a Facilitator, and a District Specialist will support the program. Dates: May 29th- July 3rd (Five Week Program) When: Monday-Friday, 8:00- 2:30
