About this slideshow The beginning slides allow for year-by-year and course-by-course advice and recommendations. All one needs to do is find the slide with the correct grade and course (i. e. sophomore in Honors Algebra 2)! The latter slides address many of the FAQs that are common to math scheduling. I am a Freshman in Honors Algebra 2 I am doing well Take Honors Precalculus You are eligible for AP Statistics and AP Comp Sci (A or Principles). You should take both before you graduate I am doing OK Consider above OR take the following courses: Trig and Precalculus I am doing poorly Repeat Honors Algebra 2 Your new grade will replace the old grade You need the solid foundation of Algebra 2 before moving on to Honors Precalculus or Trig and Precalculus Middle School Algebra 1 and Geometry will help in getting four credits for graduation

I am a Freshman in Honors Geometry I am doing well Take Honors Algebra 2 I am doing OK Take Algebra 2 or Honors Algebra 2 Consult with your teacher as to which is best for you I am doing poorly Consult with your teacher You should repeat Honors Geometry (or Geometry) Your new grade will replace the old grade MS Algebra 1 will help in earning four credits You could take Algebra 2 (if your teacher recommends it) You could take Algebra 1 (if your teacher recommends it)

I am a sophomore in Honors Precalculus I am doing well or OK You should take AP Calculus next year and create a plan that includes both AP Calculus, AP Statistics and AP Comp Sci (A or Principles) before you graduate. If you are only going to take one math class each year then take AP Calculus as a junior and AP Statistics or AP Comp Sci as a senior. Discuss the level of calculus with your teacher. If you choose to take all courses (AP Calculus AB , AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics and AP Comp Sci), then take AB as a junior and BC as a senior. You can take AP Statistics and AP Comp Sci as either a junior or senior I am doing poorly You should repeat Honors Precalculus next year Your new grade will replace the old grade and you will have a solid foundation in precalculus Four credits should not be an issue because you have Algebra 1 and Geometry credits carrying over from the middle school.

We have to give you a chance to graduate and you have to pass Algebra 2 and get 4 credits) Otherwise consult with your math teacher and guidance counselor about scheduling

I am a junior in AP courses Continue with the AP courses and/or electives Top math students should take AP Calculus, AP Statistics and AP Comp Sci (A or Principles) Top math students should also consider the applied fields such as AP Economics and the AP Science courses.

Computer Science and Math Students are now allowed to take computer science courses for math credit Up to one credit of computer science may be counted as math credit Students still need to complete through Algebra 2 (Unless receiving a vocational waiver) Courses that may be applied to math: Computer Science 1 (one semester, ½ credit) AP Computer Science Principles (full year, 1 credit) AP Computer Science A (full year, 1 credit)

What do Highly Selective Colleges want to see on a Transcript? Students who excel at mathematics typically pursue careers in science, medicine, technology, engineering, mathematics, business, and economics. Students with a high aptitude in mathematics should complete: All AP math courses (AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, and AP Statistics) AP Comp Science A or AP Comp Science Principles AP Economics As many AP science courses as possible (AP Physics B, AP Physics C, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, and AP Environmental Science)

What do competitive colleges want to see on the transcript? At a minimum, most competitive colleges want to see that a student has taken mathematics through a precalculus experience on the transcript. The following courses meet this criteria: Honors Precalculus Precalculus (semester course) The following course generally meets this criteria: Trig (semester course) Students should also attempt to have at least one AP math course on the transcript (AP Statistics or AP Calculus) It is recommended that the student have a course in coding: AP Comp Sci A, AP Comp Sci Principles or Comp Sci 1

I want to skip a math class. Is this allowed? NO! However, students are able to take courses in alternative and unique fashions by using the Credit Flex option. Consult a Guidance Counselor for more information

What is Successful Completion of a Prerequisite Course? Usually successful completion of prerequisites means earning an A, B or C in the course We require an A or B in the prerequisite course to move on to honors or AP courses (note: Honors Geometry requires teacher recommendation also) Consult with your teacher if you are not sure

What courses are currently NOT NCAA sanctioned? The following course does not count towards the three math credits necessary for the NCAA clearinghouse. This course does count for the four credits required by the state of Ohio for graduation: College Algebra Although not NCAA sanctioned, this course uses a college text and is a great preparation for entry level college math courses.

What is the prerequisite for AP Calculus? Students can become eligible for AP Calculus BC the following way: Successful completion of Honors Precalculus Successful completion of AP Calculus AB Students can become eligible for AP Calculus AB the following ways: Successful completion of Precalculus

What is the prerequisite for AP Statistics? Students can become eligible for AP Statistics in the following ways: Successful completion of Honors Algebra 2 Successful completion of Precalculus Successful completion of DAS (Data Analysis & Statistics )

What is the prerequisite for AP Computer Science? AP Computer Science Principles Concurrent enrollment or previous completion of Algebra 2 AP Computer Science A Successful completion of Algebra 2 Successful completion of Computer Science 1 (Or teacher approval)
