Skills being practiced: Year 9 English Homework Tasks | Term: Spring 1 | Topic: Narrative and Descriptive Writing Instructions: Please complete one homework task per week and hand in to your teacher. Skills being practiced: Reading Skills: Show your understanding of what you have read by using quotations and analysing the effect of these on the audience or reader. Writing Skills: Show off your range of vocabulary, your understanding of grammar and your ability to write creatively. Research Challenge: You will need to use a computer or a library to help you find the information needed to complete this task. Homework activity: Week 1: Look at a piece of narrative writing that you have read in class. Look specifically at the opening paragraph. How effective is this opening and why? Write 3 TEA paragraphs. Week 2: Write a brief description of a setting. Use ambitious vocabulary, varied sentence and paragraph structures and an interesting tone. Week 3: Produce a brief revision guide or revision page to help you to remember common errors in the following four areas: Common homophones Apostrophes Using commas/colons/semi-colons effectively Week 4: Read a piece of your own narrative or descriptive writing which you have written in class. Take a reflection sheet and rewrite one pf the paragraphs to improve it. Week 5: Write a detailed description of a city market, train station or shopping centre. Remember to zoom in and out on detail to create interesting snapshots of detail. Don’t forget to check your spellings and word choice by using your dictionary when completing your homework. These are available to buy on Parent Pay or through Mrs Parker, E4.
