Thrills and Chills “The Raven” 2018-2019 “Poe”tic Devices Thrills and Chills “The Raven” 2018-2019

Alliteration the repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginning words in a sentence or phrase Example: Sally sells seashells by the seashore.

ALLUSION referring to a well-known person or event from history or literature Example: I was surprised his nose wasn’t growing like Pinocchio’s.

Assonance the repetition of the same vowel sound Example: The greedy flea looks with glee, At the furry doggie beneath the cedar tree.

Consonance the repetition of the same consonant sound (not necessarily at the beginnings of words) Example: In my sleep, I pranced through the purple pansies, while praising the leadership of the pixies.

End Rhyme rhyme occurs at the end of each line of verse Example: I hope these rhymes don’t cause you pain, But get absorbed into your brain.

Internal Rhyme rhyme that occurs inside a line of verse Example: He thought it unfair that he was stuck in a chair, While everyone had fun in the sun.

METAPHOR a direct comparison of two unlike things using the verb “to be” (is, are, was, were) Example: Words are daggers when spoken in anger.

PERSONIFICATION assigning human characteristics to something non-human Example: The ship danced over the undulating waves of the ocean.

Repetition when the author repeats a word or phrase for a specific purpose or thematic emphasis Example: “One kiss, my bonny sweetheart, I'm after a prize to-night, But I shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light; Yet, if they press me sharply, and harry me through the day, Then look for me by moonlight,               Watch for me by moonlight, I'll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way." ~ “The Highwayman” by Alfred Noyes ~

RHYTHM a strong, regular, repeated pattern of movement or sound that gives a poem effect and flow Example: It was MAny and MAny a YEAR agO, In a KINGdom BY the SEA, That a MAIden THERE lived WHOM you may KNOW By the NAME of ANnabel LEE; And this MAIden she LIVED with NO other THOUGHT Than to LOVE and be LOVED by ME. ~ “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allan Poe~

SIMILE a comparison of two unlike things using like or as Example: Writing my history paper was as tricky as navigating a labyrinth.

SYMBOLISM using a sound, sign, word or object to represent a thing, quality, or idea Example: “Ah Sunflower” by William Blake “Ah Sunflower, weary of time, Who countest the steps of the sun; Seeking after that sweet golden clime Where the traveler’s journey is done;” Blake uses a sunflower as a symbol for human beings, and the sun symbolizes life. Therefore, these lines symbolically refer to their life cycle and their yearning for a never-ending life. Source: https://literarydevices.net/symbolism/
