Peer Editing: Each row needs to contain 4 people. If you don’t have enough students in your row, no worries. You will just look at one paper twice. Follow the feedback and editing guidelines on the handout as you rotate each essay down the row. Complete your assigned section and then pass the paper when I call time. When I was about 6 or 7, my mom helped me fill out an application for my first library card, and after that my world changed. Arthur books were my first go-to, followed closely after by Choose Your Own Adventure novels, where I was the puppet master in the destiny of my characters. Things have changed a bit since the early ‘90s. My library card is still opening doors for me to new worlds and adventures, but now I don’t even have to leave my home; books are zoomed to my e- reader through a few clicks. In places like Saudi Arabia and North Korea, citizens are not able to freely access knowledge about the world they live in. Information is controlled and manipulated to a very specific narrative that only serves government leaders and those in power. Access to literature, the internet, and other types of unfiltered information creates a populous that is more informed, and this is what defines a true democracy (source A). No institution epitomizes this aspect of democracy more than the public library, but that means that libraries have to adapt to changing times and diverse demographics. According to library science researcher Michael Crandall, libraries “serve as the only access point for digital information and services” to many underserved people groups like those lacking formal education, those in poverty, those in rural locations, or marginalized minority populations (source C). This means that going forward libraries need to adapt their marketing strategies and the services they offer. Bibliotecas wanting to stay relevant in the future need to offer classes in Spanish instead of just targeting one demographic of patrons (source B). Requiring formal identification like a driver’s license to get a library card should not be mandatory anymore. This extra step eliminates potential readers from having access to the worlds libraries open up. In addition, mobile libraries are a great solution to bring books to individuals who don’t have access to reliable transportation or live too far from their local library (source C). Libraries have served as a cornerstone of American free thinking for generations, but if we want to continue this legacy, libraries need to change as America changes.
