In the mid-1900’s, scientists realized that the ocean floor had many mountain ranges similar to those on the continents. These underwater mountain ranges.
The continents were once a single landmass surrounded by on large ocean.

The oceans are widening along the mid-ocean ridges. Sea-Floor Spreading The oceans are widening along the mid-ocean ridges.

A. Using sound waves, scientist discovered a system of underwater mountain ranges called mid-ocean ridges in many oceans. Marie Tharp & Bruce Heezen used echo soundings to build up a picture of the ocean floor. Continent Mid-ocean ridge Continental shelf Sea mount Abyssal plain Central rift zone Oceanic trench

B. In the 1960’s, Harry Hess suggested the theory of seafloor spreading to explain the ridges.

Hot, less dense material below Earth’s crust rises upward to the surface at the mid-ocean ridges. Then, it flows sideways, carrying the seafloor away from the ridge. As the seafloor spreads apart, magma moves up and flows from the cracks, cools, and forms new seafloor.

C. Evidence for seafloor spreading. 1 C. Evidence for seafloor spreading. 1. Youngest rocks are located at mid-ocean ridges. 2. Reversals of Earth’s magnetic field are recorded by rocks in strips parallel to ridges.
