The Non-Fiction Toolbox: Adding to SOAPSTone Mr. Hantak’s English II 10/01/14

The Thesis Statement The thesis of a piece of nonfiction is the sentence that clearly shows the argument. In our own essays, we usually place these at the end of our intro paragraphs. Example: Every child should play Pokemon video games because it stimulates happiness and develops problem-solving skills.

Ethos Ethos is an appeal to credibility. In an ethos appeal, the speaker attempts to establish his or her authority on the subject. In other words, we tend to believe people whom we respect and trust. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDO9hP-xKL8

Pathos Pathos is an appeal to emotion. In an ethos appeal, the speaker attempts to evoke an emotional response in his or her audience. Emotional appeals are highly effective, but run the risk of being manipulative. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtP-S9OS0o0

Logos Logos is an appeal to logic. In an ethos appeal, the speaker attempts to support his or her argument with facts and logical reasoning. Whereas pathos has the most potential for manipulation, logos has the least potential, as long as the logic makes sense. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gspElv1yvc
