Animal Behavior An action or group of actions performed by an animal in response to some stimulus.
Instinct  inborn, unlearned behavior  Triggered by releasers – Ex. male Robins  Inherited circuitry  Fixed action pattern – not simple reflexes, not.
Animal Adaptations.
Behavior – the way an organism reacts to change Stimulus – change in the organisms environment (can be inside or outside the organism’s body) Response.

Animal Behavior/ Adaptations

Behavior- the way an organism acts with other organisms AND the environment. Ex. Your dog sees you and wags his tail Ex. Your dog hears a noise and barks

Innate Behavior- what you are born with Types of Innate behavior Reflex- automatic response/ no message from the brain Ex. You jump when you a are startled Instinct- Involves using the brain but was never taught Ex. A bird building a nest Ex. Spider spinning a web

Learned Behavior- behavior that allows animals to change to survive in different situations. Types of Learned Behavior Imprinting- when animals form a social attachment The first moving object a gosling sees, is an adult goose Trial and Error- behavior changed by experience Conditioning- when there is a different response than what is expected Dog hears a bell and starts to salivate –Pavlov’s Experiment Insight- reasoning that allows animals to use past experiences to solve new problems Child climbs on chair to reach candy.

Social Behavior- the way an organism interacts with their own species Ex. Caring for young, claiming territory, protecting each other Animals communicate with sound, scents, and actions Pheromone- a chemical that one animal uses to influence another Bioluminescence- the ability to give off light Bioluminescense Movie

Adaptations- features organisms have to enable them to survive. Appendages- limbs from the body Camouflage- the ability to blend into the environment Camouflage Clip Mimicry- the ability to copy another specie

Why should organisms adapt? Obtain Food Protection Locomotion
