Purpose of the ISASP

Who Should Test? Students from all Iowa public schools in the specified grade levels must participate in the ISASP. Students from all Iowa non-public schools in the specified grade levels may opt to participate in the ISASP.

What is the purpose of the ISASP? Statewide assessments, such as the ISASP, are annual, summative measures of student achievement that are used to evaluate student learning and skills. The ISASP is one approach for measuring how Iowa students are performing on the Iowa Core. Although the ISASP is just one measure of a student’s achievement, participation from all students is important to understand and interpret the results.

How Information from the ISASP is used Information from the ISASP is used in a number of ways. The State of Iowa uses the aggregated test scores to report to the public and to the US Department of Education how Iowa students are performing on the Iowa Core. Educators and policymakers use information from the ISASP to make decisions about resources and support to be provided. Parents use this information to make decisions about how best to prepare their students. School performance results from the ISASP are less interpretable if students do not participate in the assessment.

What does ISASP measure? The Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP) is aligned with grade-specific Iowa Core standards, providing a clear and accurate assessment of student learning outcomes. The new assessments were developed for the state of Iowa in collaboration with Iowa Educators. The new assessments will provide parents with actionable information about their child’s learning

When is the ISASP administered? These new assessments will be administered between March and May 2019 and will be available in online and paper formats, with Math and Science available in Spanish.

When will we know the results of ISASP? By May 31, all districts in Iowa will complete testing.  A standard setting study will be completed during the summer of 2019 to establish the level of performance necessary for a student to be proficient.   The results of that standard setting will be presented to the State Board of Education on September 12th.   After that time, test scores will be released.
