Perceptions of Nursing and Midwifery The story so far …

Why is this important … We know that nurses are the most trusted profession in the UK (Ipsos MORI 2017 Veracity Index1) yet can often feel like they are the least respected or valued. It is recognised internationally that nurses and midwives are the heartbeat of health and care yet in the UK alone there are 40,000 vacancies. Sustainable integrated care systems depend on changing this current perception. Nursing and Midwifery are not first choice careers.

Who are we trying to influence? To improve the perceptions of nursing and midwifery amongst three partnership groups: So that their perceptions match the reality of nursing and midwifery as a high-status career, which creates massive value for society and there is an positive impact on recruitment and retention.

What are people telling us: This is what people told us is their current perception of nursing This is what people hoped the future perception of nursing would be

Building Blocks for positive perceptions 1 Giving Everyone a Voice Ten design principles were identified that can help nurses and midwives to evolve their DNA and become more confident for the future state of the professions. These are key principle for our 3 partner groups; Young people in Education, Current Nurses and Midwives and Decision Makers to consider as they work towards transforming their perceptions. Growing the Talent 2 An extraordinary career for Young People 3 Showing Pride in The Professions 4 Valuing Diversity 5 Inspiring & Supportive Leadership 6 Connecting with our Values 7 Hello My Name is … 8 Uniting across Boundaries 9 Investing in Innovation 10

You will now be transferred electronically into a breakout room where we would like to invite you to meet fellow Ambassadors. Think about these questions: Who are you, and where do you work? How long have you been a nurse or midwife? What difference do you hope to make as an Ambassador? After 10 minutes you will be returned to the main room and you will be able to share in the chat box the one thing that struck you as important for being an Ambassador. Please wait until you get back to the main room before adding your comment in the chat box

Ambassadors’ Stories We will now hear from two Ambassadors. They will tell us why being an Ambassador is important to them, and why. Annamma Wilson Practice Educator Respiratory Directorate Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS trust Sandra Corry Director of Quality and Safety North Somerset CCG

Skills toolkit Action: using the principles below help to shape the skills toolkit

What is a ? A hackathon is an event where people come together for a short period of time to collaborate on a practical project, build something to test and create breakthrough thinking

Virtual 14 and 15 May 2018 Action: join the design team to shape and promote the hackathon Teams will be invited to take part in a virtual hackathon, working locally, to come up with solutions to the following problems: How do we ensure nursing and midwifery expertise is at the heart of shaping future healthcare policy?  How do we get the media to reflect and promote nursing and midwifery as a desirable vocation? This opportunity is for those who are passionate about making a difference and committed to raising the positive profile of Nursing and Midwifery. This event needs people who are inspired by the contribution that these professions can offer to decision makers and the media. Anyone and everyone is invited

How did you feel about taking part in this virtual meeting? Very positive: Good opportunity to influence the national agenda collectively I’m cautiously hopeful that we can make some useful things happen I remain unconvinced or sceptical I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt
