Blending of Technology and Training Types – focus on the development of the right training technique for your training program The assignment

Asynchronous / synchronous Distance based /classroom Didactic /experiential Self-structured /teacher-structured Instructor led /self paced Live in person /media or text Use of technology = application of scientific knowledge to practical purposes What would be covered. What do theses terms mean?

Constraints After lunch 50 minutes Live Diverse audience Unknown needs

Asynchronies Distance based Didactic Self-structured Instructor led Live in person Use of technology Characteristics of training programs. This is NOT what you really want from this presentation.

“People don’t want to buy a quarter-inch drill. They want a quarter-inch hole!” Theodore Levitt Keep your eye on the desired outcome – There are many ways to get a quarter inch hole, and what you choose to use will depend Often we get lost in the features and functions of the product that we forget about the job that the product is designed to get done. on what you have accessible, what you can afford, and whatever other constraints and incentives you may have

You "hire" a product to do a job. CHANGE behavior Your goal is to create change. That is why you “hire” a product, whether it be a drill or a course or an instructional designer, or a trainers, or an Learning Management systems or an authoring program. Remember, learners are asking, “How will this help me with my job?” and ultimately your goal is to get them to change/improve their behavior, either through change in their knowledge, skill, or attitude.

You "hire" a product to do a job. What job do you need done? What are your constraints? What tool(s) fits best? Your goal is to create change. That is why you “hire” a product, whether it be a drill or a course or an instructional designer, or a trainers, or an Learning Management systems or an authoring program. Remember, learners are asking, “How will this help me with my job?” and ultimately your goal is to get them to change/improve their behavior, or in other words, “do things differently.”

Didactic Use of technology Self-structured Asynchronous Distance based Instructor led Live in-person I introduced terms in brief interactive lecture Used technology by leading you to websites where you can self structure your learning “about” this material and delve as deeply as you wish at your own pace. Asynchronously you can email me (or others) about any questions or needed clarification from wherever you call home. And that leaves us free to use this “live-in person” session for you to practice AND get feedback from all the resources and experience in this room. So you and your group will identify: what is the job YOU need done? What are your constraints? What tool(s) fit best?

You "hire" a product to do a job. What job do you need done? What are your constraints? (learners, time, budget, etc.) What tool(s) fits best?

"Learning will become a lot less structured, more open-ended, where the educative process is part of the work, where we don’t have this artificial separation between learning and doing." - Stephen Downes

How could it be improved? Feedback Did you learn anything? What was useful? How could it be improved?
