Notes page: Definition: Examples/ Picture:

Element: A pure substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance by ordinary means Element = One or more of the same atoms NOT bonded together.

Gold – Au Silver – Ag Oxygen – O Hydrogen – H Examples: Gold – Au Silver – Ag Oxygen – O Hydrogen – H

Compound: A pure substance made of two or more different elements chemically bonded together All compounds are molecules!

Examples: Water – H2O Carbon Dioxide – CO2 Table salt – NaCl Table Sugar- C12H22O11

Molecule: A group of atoms (same or different) held together by a chemical bond. NOT all molecules are compounds Examples: Water – H2O Oxygen – O2 Hydrogen – H2

Elbow Partner: Discuss what is the difference between and molecule and a compound?

Mixture: A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically bonded and are not in fixed proportion. Most natural substances are mixtures. NO Chemical reaction occurs when you combine 2 or more substances. No fizzing, No smoke, No precipitate, No explosion, No heat or light given off

Examples: Salad Mix Oil & vinegar Bowl of cereal Kool-Aid Salt Water
