I Can… Determine meaning and purpose in a speech. 9-10.RI.CS.6 Determine an author’s point of view or purpose and analyze how an author uses rhetoric to advance that point of view or purpose.

You Will Need… “I Have a Dream” starting on page 251 of your purple guide book The “I Have a Dream” guided reading handout starting on page 219 of your purple guide book Writing utensil

Let’s Review Yesterday you worked with a partner to answer the questions on pages 216-218 of your purple guide books. Let’s check your answers!

EVEN-ODD PROTOCOL Yesterday’s questions focused on vocabulary and literary devices—today’s questions focus on MEANING! As you work through these questions, if your desk has an even number, then answer numbers 1-11. If your desk has an odd number, then answer numbers 12-22. If you finish, work on your thematic analysis handout which should be completed when you come to class on Thursday.

Let’s Discuss your responses!

Imagine you were in the audience for Dr. King’s speech Imagine you were in the audience for Dr. King’s speech. How do you think you would have reacted? Why? Write your response on a piece of paper torn in half and shared with a neighbor. Place your work in the basket at the front of the room as you leave today. MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS ON YOUR PAPER! Work on your thematic analysis handout if you finish early.
