2019 High School Registration It is time!!!!!!!

Registration Process for All Students Each of you have received recommendations from your current core teachers for the science, social studies, math, and language arts classes you will take your freshman year. Ms. Collins has made you an individualized Course Selections sheet reflecting these recommendations. If your sheet does not have courses marked, it will be filled out at a later date. You will take these Course Selections sheets home, talk with your parents about your course choices and choose electives. Depending on the high school you attend, different electives may be available. YOU MUST REGISTER AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AT WHICH YOU ARE NOW DISTRICTED. On the sheets you take home, you can also pick electives for the school you are applying to if needed. Your core classes will stay the same but some electives may be different. Ms. Collins will take care of transferring schedules if Open Choice is granted.

Curriculum Guide Open the guide to the Table of Contents on page one (1). On this page, you will see several areas of interest. We will discuss some items briefly. Please make sure you use this guide when making decisions about your electives. When choosing electives, these pages may be helpful: Page 44 begins Arts Education courses, Page 55 begins Career Technical Education, and Page 93 begins Healthful Living Education.

Non-Traditional High School Several students have applied and were accepted to Wilmington Early College, Isaac Bear Early College High School, Sea-Tech, STEM, Marine Science Academy, International Baccalaureate, or Lyceum. If you have decided to attend, please remember you must fill out an open choice request for the school if not in their district. Additionally you may be interested in the Career Readiness Academy at Mosley Performance Learning Center. Mosley offers a small, non-traditional academic setting and the instruction is personalized with Career Technical education. It is an academy of Finance. This school also has an application process. Course Guide Pages 28-43 in the guide describe graduation requirements for all students. This includes information about credits required for graduation as well as class rank, NC Scholars Program, and college admission requirements. Please look at those pages now. This Curriculum Guide can also be found on the Students and Parents pages of the MGMS and NHCS websites.

Course Descriptions The remainder of the guide gives descriptions of all courses offered in New Hanover County High Schools. Incoming freshman have specific options that are available. Please pay attention to available classes on your Course Selection sheet when looking at electives. Some courses have pre-requisite requirements, and some are not open to freshmen. Do note that all courses are not offered at all high schools. The following codes will identify if a course if offered at your high school: Ashley (EAL), Hoggard (JTH), and New Hanover High (NHHS). Letter codes listed after a course indicate which high schools offer that course. If no letters are displayed, then all high schools offer the class.

Individual High Schools We will now discuss three of the four high schools individually with specific information for each school. First, if you are interested in applying to the STAE Program refer to page 8. and/or JROTC, page 100, and please see Ms. Collins. These programs require applications. Some students may have been recommended for STAE to understand more about this program come see Ms. Collins and read page 8. STAE: Is designed to prepare students for the rigor of post secondary education. The students are provided with academic, social, career and college support JROTC: Quality cadets, those who are well rounded both in their behavior and academic performance, possess a tremendous potential for securing full ride scholarships and possibly service academy congressional appointments. 

District Schools Many of you have been moved to a new district school. Your schedules have the new school as your school assignment. You may find this information on the NHCS website under district maps.

New Hanover High School NHHS’s signature program is Lyceum Academy. This is a very advanced curriculum that you begin in your junior year. However, your freshman and sophomore classes will need to be scheduled to fulfill certain requirements for this program. If you are were accepted in this program, let Ms. Collins know when working on schedules. Also remember if you are planning on applying for open choice to this school to participate in Lyceum, you need to fill out an Open Choice form.

Hoggard High School Hoggard’s signature program is International Baccalaureate. If you applied and were accepted to this program, you must apply for Open Choice. Hoggard will have a Freshman Transition Academy this year. Students will have two year-long classes that meet every other day, in addition to their 3 block classes. The program has been developed to help freshman with the transition to high school. Hoggard has asked us to remind you that if you requesting to double up in subject, this is not a guarantee. It is determined by spots that remain open after upper classmen have registered. STAE JROTC

Ashley High School Ashley’s signature program is the Marine Science Academy. This program takes place during the junior and senior years. If you were accepted to this program and do not live in the Ashley district, you must apply for Open Choice. Ashley has also asked up to remind you that when requesting to double up in a subject, that this is not a guarantee that you will be given this class. Once again, classes will be determined by open spots after upper classmen have registered. * JROTC, If interested please see Ms. Collins to fill out an interest form. STAE PLEASE SEE Ms. Collins and read the description in the Curriculum guide.

Registration Schedule All schedules are due to Ms. Collins no later then March the 22th. Be patient as this process takes time. We want each of you to have the opportunity to know and understand what courses and programs are offered to you. Remember you must complete a schedule for your districted high school. If accepted to another school by Open Choice, Ms. Collins will take care of sending the schedule to the new school.

Override Form ******If your parents strongly disagree with the recommendations of the core teachers, they may fill out a course override form. Please be advised that if you are placed in a class using the course override form, you will not be moved from this class, regardless of the grade you are making in it next year. Basically, once you have started the class, the high school say you are staying in it! The teachers are making these decisions based on EOG tests, classroom tests, report cards, as well as effort being made in the classroom. An override form should only be considered if you feel the recommendation is incorrect. These forms can be given to you by Ms. Collins.

Conclusion Registering for high school can be a stressful time. We are all here to help you in this process. By doing much of the work for you, Ms. Collins has tried to make it as stress free as possible. Your job is to use your curriculum guide to research and learn about the electives you wish to take. You will also need to have some alternatives in mind, so plan to select 7 elective classes. If you choose, Band, Orchestra, Chorus or JROTC, these are yearlong electives. Recommendations/Requirements The qualifications guiding core class recommendations will be linked on the website. Please check this first if you have questions about a recommendation. Some History classes will be different then others in your neighborhood or household. This is upon recommendation from teachers. Final Thoughts Ms. Collins will meet with each student individually before putting classes into the computer. Please make sure you and your parents sign the bottom of the sheet. If it is not signed we will return to you to get signed. Good luck, you are almost there.
