Chapter 19- Operation Pasteles Evelyn and Mami are making pasteles. Evelyn learns that Mami doesn't get along with Abuela because Abuela was always leaving her as a child. Evelyn's father died when Mami was pregnant with Evelyn, so she moved to New York for a better life. When they leave for church, the Young Lords meet with the pastor but their requests are denied. Abuela talks about Puerto Rican Nationalists spirits. Chapter 19-  Operation Pasteles

On December 28,1969, The Young Lords took over the church and barricaded the doors. They gave people a chance to stay or go. Mami and Abuela argued some, but decided to stay with Evelyn to keep her safe. Chapter 20- The Takeover

Chapter 21- The Enchanted Cottage Evelyn describes what it is like inside the church and compares it to a movie called The Enchanted Cottage. At home, Evelyn asks Mami if they could donate food. Mami doesn't want to donate food and they argue, leaving Evelyn wondering about how poor they are and how much Mami cares about food ( thinking about the pasteles from chapter 19).
