HIST 1301 Midterm Review Written Exam

Be detailed and specific! Show what you know! Essays: You will answer two of the four listed essay questions. However, you must choose one essay from Group A and one essay from Group B. Each essay is worth 50 points. Be detailed and specific! Show what you know!

Group A Discuss the major events and motivations for European exploration and colonization from 1492 through the 17th Century. Why did Europeans come to the New World and what were the consequences of contact and the Colombian Exchange? In your opinion, what were the most significant outcomes of European colonization? Explain the creation and significance of the race-based, slave society in Virginia during the Colonial Period. Explain how it started and changed over time. Briefly discuss why a slave society did not develop in New England. Finally, and most importantly, discuss what YOU think is the significance and legacy of the Virginia slave society in American History

Group B Discuss the colonization of Massachusetts and New England in the 17th Century. How did Puritans see the world and how did this factor into the colonization of New England? What were the characteristics of Puritan colonization and how successful were they in their ventures? Finally, and most importantly, how did Puritan colonization affect the Revolution and the creation of the United States? Discuss the Enlightenment and the Great Awakening, including their effect on the Revolution. Why was the Enlightenment a change in the worldview of European colonists and how did that factor into the creation of the United States? What was the Great Awakening and why do some historians claim it was either the cause or symptom of a larger cultural change?
