Types of Regions Formal Cultural Functional Perceptual

Formal -- You can go to the areas that are the same color, and collect data on things like rainfall, and see that they have similarities. What kind of region am I?

Formal Can be proven to exist Data can be collected about them

Formal boundaries of states, countries, counties, etc Formal boundaries of states, countries, counties, etc. do not change often.

Formal – Physical features have boundaries that can be proven; we can see where the tributaries flow into (in this case, the Amazon)

Cultural Region A type of Formal Region People who have one or more cultural traits in common Language Religion Historical traditions

Formal – you can visit certain areas and see that they are speaking the same language, or a similar language

Functional Regions Have a use Have a center and are connected with the area around it by some form of transportation route
