The RESCCUE research sites Members of 100 Resilient cities network (program pioneered by Rockefeller Foundation) Strong commitment with resilience and climate change CRO (City Resilience Officer) with a clear role in the city strategies to improve urban resilience Different climate variables and affected services considered in the RESCCUE project Urban water cycle in the core Flooding and urban drainage are the links among the three cities Need to develop RAPs RAP: Resilient Action Plans

RESCCUE APPROACH

RESCCUE APPROACH – DETAILED vs HOLISTIC

HOW CAN WE BUILD RESILIENCE THROUGH SECTORIAL MODELS? The example of urban drainage Traditional tools 1D sewer models allow the analysis of the behavior of a underground pipes Advanced tools 1D/2D coupled models allow the hydraulic analysis of the urban surfaces where urban activities occur and goods and properties are concentrated Integrated models Surface overland flow can be linked to damage and traffic models. 1D/2D model can be linked to marine model (COWAMA)

HOW CAN WE BUILD RESILIENCE THROUGH HOLISTIC MODELS? The HAZUR Tool Inclusion of urban services and infrastructures GIS platform for geopositioning critical infrastructures Definition of interdependencies between services and infrastructures Definition of impacts and what if analysis Simulation of the impacts and cascading effects to assess urban resilience Inclusion of KPIR and management module to operate urban resilience Applications in several cities City: Lisboa Focus: flood resilience Scope: flood prone areas Services: 18 Infrastructures: 146 City: Barcelona Focus: city resilience Scope: whole urban area Services: 56 Infrastructures: 786 RAP: Resilient Action Plans City: Bristol Focus: tidal and surface floods Scope: two districts of the city Services: 23 Infrastructures: 76

Holistic method Online tool All types of cities VALUE PROPOSITION – WEB-TOOL & METHOD For cities who must face chronic stresses and acute shocks with limited budgets our product is the best online tool to support city decision makers to manage resilience trough cascading effects, stakeholders training, participatory assessment and dynamic integrated scorecard. Holistic method Online tool All types of cities For cities who must face chronic stresses and acute shocks with limited budgets our product is the first city-resilience-oriented online tool that provides holistic city cross-management methodologies based on cascade effects and systemic simulation to go through the whole process of integrating resilience concepts into operations of municipal services and infrastructures. The tool can be used in all types of cities (Small-Medium and Large) and its is complemented by an online coursez that external consultants or internal city responsible for the HAZUR implementation can take.
