Reading the board is important! ENGLISH CORE: “THINGS TO DO” will always be posted when you arrive. It will include the daily agenda and instructions. Reading the board is important! Discuss how class runs…grammar or “little stuff” first, then book study, then matrix time…NO essays and stuff at home…reading will be the ONLY homework unless there are other circumstances. Parent/Teacher communication WILL happen if this becomes necessary. So? What’s a matrix!?!? Next slide

At the start of each unit, you will receive a MATRIX. This will help you develop time management skills. Emphasize the point that this is 6th grade English, and it’s not a credit bearing course. The ONLY grade that will follow them is the end of the year grade, so a B or even a C along the way isn’t cause for alarm. I WILL contact you as needed! I promise! This is the time to allow the kids to start to figure out what works-and doesn’t work-for them. Grades are not the goal. Grades are not punitive. Learning and growth in literary analysis and communication are the goals. Let that be the focus. If the learning takes place as intended, the grades WILL come by the end of the quarter. Patience with the numbers and support with reading/organization is the parental goal. It’s a process, and it can (likely will) be bumpy here and there, but trust the process!
